Wake in a palace in Rajasthan

Waking in a former maharaja's palace, with the lake below your balcony and breakfast served on the terrace, is the India many travellers come for. Rajasthan does it best. Udaipur's palaces sit on the water, Jaipur's pink old city rewards an early start, and the desert forts glow in the late afternoon. A private driver and guide make the distances easy.

The Taj Mahal is worth timing for sunrise, before the heat and the crowds arrive. In Varanasi, an evening boat on the Ganges shows the ceremonies on the ghats, and in the south Kerala trades forts for backwaters, tea hills and spice gardens. A few nights on a rice barge or at a tiger reserve lodge round out a first visit.

Step inside India's homes, palaces and wild places

Hosts open their homes and kitchens, and naturalists take you into tiger country.

  • The Taj Mahal at sunrise

Arrive as the gates open and watch the white marble of the Taj Mahal turn from grey to gold, before the day's crowds arrive.

  • Cook with a Rajput family

Step into the home of descendants of the Rathore dynasty in the Aravalli hills for a private cooking lesson, then sit down to the dishes you made together.

  • An evening in Old Delhi

Spend an evening at Dharampura Haveli, a restored 19th-century mansion near Chandni Chowk, with kite flying on the roof, classical dance and dinner.

  • Delhi's street food with a guide

Taste your way through the capital's food, rich korma and hot, syrupy jalebi among it, with a guide who knows the best stalls and the stories behind them.

  • Mumbai at dawn

See the city wake up on a guided early tour, from markets heavy with vegetables, spices and flowers to the streets before the traffic starts.

  • Diwali or Holi with a family

Time your visit for Diwali, the festival of lights in October or November, or Holi in spring, and join a local family to celebrate at home.

  • Sleep under the stars near Pench

Spend a night on a machan, a raised platform bed like those farmers use to watch their crops, listening to the forest in tiger country.

  • Kerala's backwaters by rice barge

Cruise Vembanad Lake on a converted rice barge, past palm-lined villages and paddy fields, with meals cooked on board.

Decide between Rajasthan and the south

The north brings palaces and forts, while Kerala and Tamil Nadu bring temples and backwaters.

  • Delhi

Mughal tombs, the Red Fort and the lanes of Old Delhi beside the wide avenues of New Delhi, where most of our trips begin.

  • Agra and the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal at first light, Agra Fort across the river and the red sandstone city of Fatehpur Sikri nearby.

  • Jaipur and Udaipur

Rajasthan's royal cities: Jaipur's pink old town and Amber Fort, and Udaipur's lake palaces framed by the Aravalli hills.

  • Varanasi and Khajuraho

Dawn boat rides past the ghats of the Ganges, then the carved temples of Khajuraho, a short flight away.

  • Kerala

Kochi's old port, the spice and tea hills around Periyar and slow days on the backwaters of the south west coast.

  • Tamil Nadu

Temple towns such as Madurai, the French quarter of Pondicherry and the shore temples near Chennai on the Bay of Bengal.

Plan India for the cooler season

The dry months after the monsoon suit most regions, and the hills take over when the plains grow hot.

  • JanuaryBest

Cool, dry and clear in Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan, warm in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

  • FebruaryBest

Dry and pleasant across the country, a fine month for Varanasi and the south.

  • MarchGood

Warming up in the north, with the Holi festival of colours in most years.

  • AprilMixed

Hot across the northern plains, while Kerala's hills stay milder.

  • MayAvoid

The hottest month in Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan, before the monsoon breaks.

  • JuneAvoid

The monsoon reaches Kerala and Mumbai, and the heat lingers in the north.

  • JulyMixed

Monsoon rain across most of India, with green landscapes and fewer travellers.

  • AugustMixed

Rains continue, though Udaipur's lakes fill and the hills turn green.

  • SeptemberMixed

The monsoon eases in the north, with humid days before the dry season.

  • OctoberBest

Dry season returns to the north, with Diwali in October or November.

  • NovemberBest

Clear and cool across the north and Kerala, with Tamil Nadu's own rains into December.

  • DecemberBest

Cool and dry in the north, warm on the Kerala coast, busy over the festive weeks.

Reach Delhi on a direct flight

Delhi has direct flights from Europe, the Gulf, North America and Australia, and connections reach most other Indian cities.

  • Sydney (non-stop): about 13 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): about 13 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 16 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 12 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 22 h
  • London (non-stop): about 9 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 3.5 h

Go on to Nepal or Sri Lanka

Kathmandu is a short flight from Delhi, and Colombo is an easy hop from the south.

  • Nepal

Kathmandu's temples and the Himalaya on the horizon.

  • Sri Lanka

Ancient rock fortresses, tea country and wild southern beaches.

Ask about India before you go

How do I apply for an Indian e-Visa?+
You apply online before you go, and most holiday visitors, Australian passport holders among them, use India's e-Visa and carry a printed copy. You also complete India's online e-Arrival Card within three days before travel, plus a health self-declaration within 24 hours of arrival. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
When is India too hot to travel?+
April to June is hot across the plains, and the monsoon follows into September. Ladakh and the Himalayan foothills are at their best in those months, so your travel expert can still plan a trip between April and September.
How many days does the Golden Triangle take?+
Allow seven to eight days for Delhi, Agra and Jaipur at an easy pace. Add five more for Udaipur and Jodhpur, or a few days in a tiger reserve such as Ranthambore.
Where can we see tigers in India?+
Ranthambore sits within easy reach of Jaipur, while Bandhavgarh and Kanha in central India give some of the best sighting chances. Most parks close their core zones during the monsoon, so your travel expert plans game drives outside it.
Is Kerala a good alternative to Rajasthan?+
Kerala suits a slower trip, with backwaters by houseboat, tea estates in Munnar and beaches on the Arabian Sea. Many guests pair a week in the north with five nights in Kerala.
Can we honeymoon in a Rajasthan palace?+
Yes. Udaipur's lake palaces and the heritage hotels of Jaipur and Jodhpur suit a honeymoon, with boat rides at sunset and dinners in palace courtyards. Tell us the occasion and your travel expert books the rooms with the best views.
What should we wear at Indian temples and mosques?+
Cover shoulders and knees, and women should carry a scarf to cover their hair where asked. Shoes come off before you enter, so slip-ons make long sightseeing days easier.
