Day 1 · Epidaurus, Mycenae and Olympia
Take the coast road to the Corinth Canal for a short stop, then visit the theatre at Epidaurus, known for its acoustics. After a photo stop in Nafplio, see the site of Mycenae and the Tomb of Agamemnon, then cross the central Peloponnese by Tripoli and Megalopoli to Olympia for dinner.
Olympia and Delphi
Day 2 · Olympia and Delphi
In the morning, visit the Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus, the ancient stadium and the archaeological museum. The road then crosses the plains of Ilia and Achaia to the bridge from Rio to Antirrio, passing Nafpaktos and Itea on the way to Delphi for dinner.
Delphi and Kalambaka
Day 3 · Delphi and Kalambaka
A morning at the archaeological site and museum of Delphi. Then drive north to Kalambaka, a small town below the great rocks of Meteora that rise sheer from the plain of Thessaly, for dinner.
Meteora and Thessaloniki
Day 4 · Meteora and Thessaloniki
Visit the monasteries of Meteora, perched on rock towers and holding fine Byzantine art. Then cross the plain of Thessaly and the Vale of Tempi beneath Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, to Thessaloniki, its second city.
Thessaloniki
Day 5 · Thessaloniki
A morning tour of a city that was second only to Constantinople in the Byzantine world: the White Tower, the Roman Forum, the old market, the Church of St Demetrius and the Byzantine walls. A short walk takes in the Palace and Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda, with its early Christian mosaics, and the rest of the day is free in the city centre.
Edessa, Naoussa, Vergina and Veria
Day 6 · Edessa, Naoussa, Vergina and Veria
Start with the waterfalls at Edessa, then the School of Aristotle near Naoussa, where the philosopher taught the young Alexander the Great. At Vergina, ancient Aigai, a museum built inside the great burial mound holds the royal tombs, including finds from the tomb of Philip II. End in Veria at St Paul's Bema and the old Jewish quarter before returning to Thessaloniki.
Pella and Dion
Day 7 · Pella and Dion
Drive to Pella, Alexander the Great's capital, to see the fourth century BC floor mosaics in place and in the museum. Visit the archaeological park of Dion at the foot of Mount Olympus, then head south through Thessaly, Lamia, Thermopylae and Thebes to Athens in the late afternoon.
