Ride into the Swiss Alps by train

Switzerland is the easiest way into the high mountains. Panoramic trains do the climbing, your bags can travel ahead by rail, and a lakeside terrace is never far away. It is a country of quiet competence, where the scenery is the event and everything else works.

Zermatt sits beneath the Matterhorn and has no cars, and the Jungfrau region above Interlaken has the Eiger's north face and a railway up to the Jungfraujoch. Lucerne has its covered bridge and lake steamers, and the shore of Lake Geneva brings the terraced Lavaux vineyards and the castle at Montreux. Zurich and Bern add old towns, galleries and good restaurants between mountain stays.

Taste Swiss chocolate and mountain air

Hands-on and outdoor days, arranged around your trip.

  • Make chocolate in Zurich

Work with a master chocolatier in a Zurich chocolate boutique and learn the techniques behind Switzerland's finest pralines.

  • White water near Interlaken

Raft the River Simme with experienced guides, an easy drive from Interlaken and the Bernese Oberland.

  • Hike Mount Pilatus

Climb Mount Pilatus above Lake Lucerne with an alpine guide, with wide views over the lake and the Alps.

Choose your Swiss lake and peak

Zermatt suits Matterhorn views, and Lucerne suits lake days with easy mountain trips.

  • Lucerne

A covered wooden bridge over the river, an old town of painted houses and Mount Pilatus and Rigi above the lake.

  • Interlaken and the Jungfrau

Two lakes and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau above them, with mountain railways climbing to the glaciers.

  • Lausanne and Lake Geneva

Terraced Lavaux vineyards above the lake, with Bern's arcaded old town on the way west from Zurich.

Panoramic train seats and Zermatt hotels book early, so we reserve them as soon as you choose your dates.

Ask about Swiss trains and seasons

Switzerland is not in the EU, so do the Schengen rules apply?+
Yes. Switzerland is outside the EU but inside the Schengen area, so Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. The EU's Entry/Exit System applies at Swiss borders too, recording your fingerprints and photo. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Do we need a Swiss Travel Pass?+
A Swiss Travel Pass covers most trains, buses and lake boats, and gives discounts on many mountain railways. For the Glacier Express or Bernina Express, we also reserve the panoramic seats, which are booked separately.
When is the best time to ride the Glacier Express?+
The Glacier Express runs all year, but June to September brings green valleys and open high passes for walking. Winter journeys are just as lovely under snow, and the ski season suits a stay in Zermatt or St. Moritz.
How many days do you need for Lucerne, Zermatt and the Jungfrau?+
Allow nine or ten days, with three nights in each of Lucerne, the Jungfrau region and Zermatt. The scenic trains between them take most of a day, so they count as part of the trip.
Can we celebrate a birthday or honeymoon with a Matterhorn view?+
Yes. We book a suite facing the Matterhorn in Zermatt and a private dinner in a mountain restaurant reached by gondola. For a honeymoon, a few days on Lake Geneva or Lake Lucerne adds lake steamers and lakeside spas.
Is the Jungfraujoch worth a day?+
The railway climbs to Europe's highest station at 3,454 metres, with views over the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps. It is best on a clear day, so we keep that date flexible in your plan.
Do Swiss river cruises sail on the Rhine?+
Yes. Rhine cruises often start or finish in Basel, sailing north through France and Germany to Amsterdam. We add a few nights in Lucerne or the Alps before you board.
