Dress for an evening in Vienna

Austria suits travellers who love a sense of occasion. In Vienna you can spend a morning over coffee and cake in a grand café, an afternoon in the Hofburg and an evening at the State Opera, all within walking distance. The city still keeps its rituals, and joining them is the fun of being there.

Out on the Danube, the Wachau Valley lines the river with vineyards, apricot orchards and the Baroque abbey at Melk. Salzburg sits under its fortress with music festivals in summer and markets in Advent. In the Tyrol, Kitzbühel and the mountain villages offer skiing in winter and walking in summer, and the Salzkammergut lakes lie just east of Salzburg.

Experience Vienna's music, food and woods

Moments in and around the capital, arranged around your days.

  • Mozart's Vienna apartment

Visit the only surviving Vienna apartment of Mozart, where he lived in the 1780s, and end the evening with a piano recital of his music.

  • Learn to make apple strudel

Watch a pastry chef stretch and roll a classic apple strudel at Café Residenz in the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace, then taste the result.

  • Vienna from new angles

Ride the giant Ferris wheel in the Prater for the view over the city, then see the trees growing out of the Hundertwasser House.

  • Into the Vienna Woods

Drive into the Vienna Woods to Liechtenstein Castle and Heiligenkreuz Abbey, hear the story of Mayerling and walk the Helenental valley.

Divide your time between Vienna and the Alps

Vienna suits music and art, and the Alps suit fresh air and walking.

  • Vienna

Opera and festival seats are released months ahead, so we plan your dates around them.

Ask about Vienna's concerts and the Danube

Is Austria covered by the Schengen 90-day rule?+
Yes. Austria is in the Schengen area, so your days count across all Schengen countries, and a Danube cruise through Germany and Hungary uses the same allowance. Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders, for example, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The EU's Entry/Exit System records your fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
How do you get tickets to the Vienna State Opera?+
Tickets are released months ahead and the best seats go quickly. Your travel expert books them as soon as they open, and we can add a guided tour behind the scenes.
When is the best time to visit Vienna and the Wachau?+
May, June and September bring warm days for the Wachau vineyards and the river. The opera season runs from September to June, so a summer trip trades the State Opera for open-air concerts.
How long do you need in Vienna after a Danube cruise?+
Three nights gives you the Hofburg, Schönbrunn and an evening concert at an easy pace. Add two nights in Salzburg, about two and a half hours by train, if you want the Alps too.
Can we celebrate an anniversary at a Viennese ball or concert?+
Yes. The ball season runs through January and February, and we can arrange tickets, a dance lesson and the right attire. In other months, a box at a concert followed by dinner in a grand café makes the night.
What is the Wachau Valley known for?+
The Wachau is a UNESCO-listed stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems, known for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. River cruises sail through it, and a day ashore can include a winery lunch in Dürnstein.
Is Salzburg or the Tyrol better for the Alps?+
Salzburg suits music lovers, with Mozart's birthplace and the fortress above the old town. The Tyrol, around Innsbruck and Kitzbühel, suits travellers who want high mountains, with walking in summer and skiing in winter.
