Your cost per guest is really two numbers. One is the average: your total spend divided by the people in the room. The other is what a single extra guest adds, and that one is usually smaller, because big costs like the photographer and the dress don't climb with every name on the list.
In the US, the average is US$284 per guest. In Australia, couples spent an average of A$38,252 on 85 guests in 2026, about A$450 a head. Knowing what each guest adds shows you where the list matters, so you can put the money into the day you want. To run your own figures, our free wedding budget planner holds your total, your categories and your spending side by side.
US couples who married in 2024 spent an average of US$33,000, Experian reports. At US$284 a head, 50 guests come to about US$14,200, 100 guests to US$28,400 and 200 guests to almost US$60,000.
The average Australian wedding in 2026 had 85 guests, the Sydney Morning Herald reports from the 2026 Australian Wedding Industry Report. Guest lists are shrinking: they held at 100 to 110 before COVID and have fallen to 85.
The average spreads every cost across every guest, including the ones that don't change with numbers. So if your average comes out at A$450 a head, dropping ten guests won't save A$4,500.
What one extra guest adds is the per-guest part of your budget: the venue's food and drink package, a seat at the table, an invitation and a favour. Cutting a guest saves you that amount. Add those lines up and you know what the guest list is worth to you.
These are the lines that grow as the list grows:

Some of the biggest lines barely move with the guest list. According to the 2026 report, Australian couples spent an average of A$3,567 on a photographer, A$2,591 on a dress, A$2,142 on music and A$1,031 on a celebrant.
A smaller list barely shrinks these, so it pushes the average per head up even as the total comes down. Run the numbers both ways before you cut. If you're planning a small wedding, our guide to micro wedding costs shows how that plays out.
The date makes a difference. Saturdays are still the most popular day, and Thursdays have now overtaken Sundays, the Herald reports. Its sources suggest a midweek or off-peak date, like a Thursday in May instead of a Saturday in February, because suppliers will often discount those dates and add extras on top.
Where you marry matters too. In the 2026 report, average spend was A$42,322 in New South Wales and A$25,423 in Tasmania. In the US, Experian's state figures run from about US$16,000 in Alaska to US$54,400 in New Jersey.
The package itself moves the number as well. Ask what the venue's price covers, because audiovisual and security guard fees may or may not be included, the Herald notes.

When the list itself needs work, our guide to making a wedding guest list walks you through who to invite and in what order.
Start with what you want the day to be. Pick the two or three things that matter most to you, whether that's the food, the setting or the band, and fund those first. Then set the guest count at a number you can host that way.
Our guide to wedding budget percentages shows how couples usually split the total, and the wedding cost breakdown covers each category in detail. Leave room for the costs no quote shows, which our guide to hidden wedding costs lists.
Once you know your per-head figure, you can shortlist venues that fit it. Browse venues and vendors on the Wedded Marketplace, or let Wedded Concierge find the ones that suit your guest count and your plans.
