Before the quotes start rolling in, it helps to know what other couples spend. Australian couples spent an average of $38,252 on their wedding in 2026, according to the 2026 Australian Wedding Industry Report, a survey of more than 4,000 couples. Most started with a budget of about $29,471, and on average couples spend about 23% more than they first planned.
That $38,252 is up 8% on the year before, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. It's a mean, based on an average of 85 guests, and the survey also drew on 540 wedding suppliers.
More than half of couples (58%) spent, or plan to spend, between $10,000 and $39,000. And 69% got financial help from their families. If you're still working out who covers what, who pays for the wedding goes through how families tend to split it.
This is what the average Australian couple spent on each part of the day, from the same survey:
Category | Average cost |
Reception venue (usually includes food and drinks) | $17,518 |
Catering (when billed separately) | $6,177 |
Photography | $3,567 |
Videography | $3,125 |
Decorations and styling | $2,849 |
Flowers | $2,639 |
Wedding dress | $2,591 |
Furniture and prop hire | $2,203 |
Music | $2,142 |
Formal wear for the groom and groomsmen | $2,102 |
Wedding car | $1,223 |
Photo booth | $1,038 |
Celebrant | $1,031 |
Invitations | $1,001 |
Hair and makeup | $992 |
Bomboniere | $678 |
Bridesmaids' dresses (all of them) | $645 |
Wedding cake | $645 |
The lines add up to more than $38,252, partly because not every couple books every item: around half hire furniture and props, for example, while 90% hire a photographer. The engagement ring sits outside the wedding total, at an average of $6,842.
The reception venue takes the biggest share, about 46% of the average budget. Most Australian venues sell a package with food and drinks included, which works out to about $206 per guest, though what's in the package varies and may not cover extras like audiovisual gear or security. If your venue charges for the room and the food separately, catering averages $6,177 on its own.
Alternate drop is still the most popular way to serve dinner, chosen by 33% of couples, ahead of feasting style at 28% and buffets at 16%.
Photography averages $3,567, and it's the service more couples book than any other. Video adds another $3,125 on average, though a supplier who does both can bring the combined cost down.
Flowers ($2,639), decorations and styling ($2,849) and furniture hire ($2,203) come to about $7,700 if you pay for all three. The wedding flowers cost guide goes into the flowers in more detail.
The wedding dress averages $2,591, and three in four brides buy theirs new. Plenty plan a second look for the reception, too, with 42% of couples opting for at least one outfit change. Hair and makeup adds about $992.
Music averages $2,142, and a DJ is the most popular choice. A celebrant costs about $1,031 for a standard ceremony, and the wedding car about $1,223.
Invitations average $1,001, plus at least $2 in postage for each one you send. Bomboniere averages $678, and 44% of couples spend under $5 a guest. The cake comes in at about $645. Then there are the fees that never show up on a quote, which our hidden wedding costs round-up goes through.
Where you marry makes a big difference. The 2026 report puts the state averages at:
The Northern Territory had too little data to include.
Before COVID, Australian weddings averaged 100 to 110 guests, and the 2026 report puts the average at 85. By our estimate, multiplying the average venue spend per guest by 100 puts the reception at about $20,600, before photography, flowers, attire or music, though every venue prices its packages differently. Per-guest items such as invitations, postage and bomboniere also go up with every name you add.
The easiest saving is the date. The report's authors told the Sydney Morning Herald to look at a midweek or off-peak date, like a Thursday in May instead of a Saturday in February, because suppliers will often discount those dates and add extras on top. Sundays aren't the cheap option they used to be, thanks to surcharges and casual staffing rates.
Their other tips:
The guest list is still the biggest driver of the budget, and often the hardest thing to change. For more ways to cut back, see how to save money on a wedding, and use wedding budget percentages to split your own total across these categories.
