See Hegra's tombs rise out of the sand

Few places still feel this new to travellers. At Hegra in the AlUla oasis, more than 100 tombs are carved into sandstone outcrops by the Nabataeans, the same people who built Petra, and for centuries few outsiders saw them. It became Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage site, and a guide takes you between the tombs in the quiet of the desert.

Around AlUla, wind has shaped the rock into forms such as Elephant Rock, and the Gharameel area is set aside for stargazing. Outside Riyadh, Diriyah, the first seat of the Saudi state, has been restored around its mud brick quarter. Jeddah, on the Red Sea, has an old town of coral stone houses and a relaxed waterfront.

Combine AlUla with Riyadh

AlUla holds the ancient sites, and Riyadh shows the country's past and its new ambitions.

  • Riyadh

The capital, with the mud-brick ruins of Diriyah, the Masmak Fort and the Edge of the World cliffs nearby.

  • AlUla and Hegra

Sandstone canyons and rock formations around Hegra, the kingdom's first UNESCO World Heritage site, with over 100 Nabataean tombs.

Go to Saudi Arabia in the cool season

The cooler months are best for the desert, and summer heat makes outdoor sightseeing hard.

  • JanuaryBest

Warm days and cold desert nights in AlUla.

  • FebruaryBest

Mild and clear, ideal for Hegra and the canyons.

  • MarchBest

Warm days before the heat, spring in the desert.

  • AprilGood

Hot afternoons in Riyadh, mornings comfortable in AlUla.

  • MayMixed

Heat builds quickly across the country.

  • JuneAvoid

Extreme heat in Riyadh and the desert.

  • JulyAvoid

One of the hottest months, sightseeing is hard.

  • AugustAvoid

Very hot, best avoided for desert travel.

  • SeptemberMixed

Still hot, evenings start to cool late in the month.

  • OctoberGood

Heat eases and the AlUla season begins.

  • NovemberBest

Warm days and cool nights across the country.

  • DecemberBest

Mild days and cold desert nights, AlUla at its busiest.

Fly into Riyadh or Jeddah via the Gulf

Connections run through Doha or Dubai, with domestic flights on to AlUla.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 18 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 18 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 19 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 14 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 19 h
  • London (non-stop): about 6.5 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 2 h

Continue to Petra in Jordan

Petra shares Hegra's Nabataean builders, and Egypt is a short flight across the Red Sea.

  • Jordan

Petra's Treasury, Wadi Rum's desert and the Dead Sea.

  • Egypt

The Pyramids and a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan.

Understand what a Saudi trip involves

Which visa lets us visit Saudi Arabia?+
A tourist e-visa, applied for online through the Visit Saudi website, which Australian passport holders, for example, need before they travel. Australia's Smartraveller currently says do not travel, so read your own government's latest advice before planning, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
How do visits to Hegra work?+
Hegra is visited on guided tours booked in advance, which take you between the main tombs and explain the Nabataean inscriptions. Your travel expert books the tour with your AlUla stay.
When is AlUla at its best?+
October to March brings warm days and cool desert nights. Summer temperatures pass 40°C.
How long should we stay in AlUla?+
Three or four nights covers Hegra, Elephant Rock, Dadan and an evening of stargazing. Add two nights in Riyadh for Diriyah.
What is the dress code for visitors?+
Visitors wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees in public. Women do not need to cover their hair, and abayas are not required for tourists.
Can we combine Saudi Arabia with Petra?+
Yes. Petra was carved by the same Nabataean people as Hegra, and the small group journey continues into Jordan. Your travel expert arranges the connection.
Is AlUla a romantic choice for an anniversary?+
Yes. AlUla's resorts sit in quiet canyons, and dinner under the stars at Gharameel suits an anniversary. Your travel expert arranges it with the resort.
Is alcohol available in Saudi Arabia?+
No. Alcohol is not sold to visitors and cannot be brought into the country. Hotels serve mocktails and Arabic coffee instead.
