Wadi Rum, Petra and the Nile

13 days · 12 nights

Amman → Wadi Rum → Petra → Dead Sea → Cairo → Luxor → Aswan → Abu Simbel

You begin in Amman with Mount Nebo and the mosaics of Madaba, then cross Wadi Rum by 4x4 and walk through the Siq to Petra's Treasury. After a float in the Dead Sea you fly to Cairo and on to Luxor, where a private sailing boat carries you up the Nile to Aswan over four nights. Abu Simbel and the Giza Plateau close the journey.

Walk into Petra through the Siq

Petra is the moment most travellers come for, and it lives up to it. You walk the Siq, a narrow canyon of rose coloured stone, until the Treasury appears through the gap, carved by the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago. Go early to have the Treasury almost to yourself, then climb to the Monastery for views over the valleys.

South of Petra, Wadi Rum is a desert of red sand and sandstone mountains, where Bedouin hosts cook dinner in the sand and the night sky is one of the clearest in the region. The Dead Sea, the lowest point on land, lets you float without effort. Jerash has one of the best preserved Roman cities outside Italy, and Aqaba opens onto the coral of the Red Sea.

Give Petra two days, then head south

Petra rewards at least two days, and Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea round out the week.

  • Petra

The Nabataean city carved from rose-red rock, reached through the narrow Siq to the Treasury and the Monastery beyond.

  • Wadi Rum

A desert valley of sandstone mountains and red sand, explored by jeep and best seen at sunset.

  • The Dead Sea and Amman

Float in the lowest point on earth, then explore the Roman theatre and citadel of the capital.

Walk Petra in the mild months

Mild days suit the long walks at Petra, and summer heat makes early starts important.

  • Saudi Arabia

AlUla's sandstone canyons and the tombs of Hegra.

Answer your Petra and Wadi Rum questions

Can I get a visa on arrival in Jordan?+
It depends on your passport, though many visitors can. Australian passport holders, for example, can get a single entry visa valid for 90 days on arrival at Amman's Queen Alia International Airport or at a border crossing, paid in cash at land borders. Australia's Smartraveller currently advises reconsidering your need to travel, so read your own government's latest advice before you book, as rules change.
Is Petra by Night worth staying up for?+
Petra by Night runs on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, when the Siq and the Treasury square are lit by around 1,500 candles. It suits a second night in Wadi Musa after a full day on the trails, and your travel expert books the ticket with your entry.
How many days should we give Jordan?+
A week covers Amman, Jerash, two days at Petra, a night in Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea. With five days you still see Petra and Wadi Rum properly, though the north is rushed.
When is Jordan most comfortable to visit?+
Spring and autumn bring warm days and cool nights, the right weather for walking Petra. Summer is very hot in the south, and winter nights in Wadi Rum can be cold.
What is a night in a Wadi Rum camp like?+
Camps range from Bedouin tents to domed rooms with glass roofs facing the stars, most with private bathrooms. Dinner is often zarb, lamb and vegetables slow cooked under the sand, and the evening ends by the fire.
Can we float in the Dead Sea on the same trip?+
Yes. The Dead Sea resorts are about an hour from Amman, and the water is so salty you float without trying. Many travellers spend their last night there before flying home.
Is a Jordan Pass worth buying?+
The Jordan Pass covers the tourist visa fee if you stay at least three nights, and includes entry to Petra and more than 40 other sites. Your travel expert tells you whether it suits your route.
Would Jordan suit a honeymoon?+
Jordan suits couples who want adventure first and rest after, with Petra and Wadi Rum followed by a Dead Sea spa or the Red Sea at Aqaba. Your travel expert can arrange a private dinner at your desert camp.
