Turn your stopover into a stay

Most travellers first see Singapore from the airport, and most underestimate it. Give the city a few nights and it opens up: kaya toast in a Tiong Bahru coffee shop, an afternoon in the Botanic Gardens and dinner at a hawker centre, where some of the best food in Asia comes on a plastic tray. Changi is one of the best-connected hubs in Asia, and everything works.

The neighbourhoods are the real draw. Peranakan shophouses line the streets of Katong, the gold dome of the Sultan Mosque rises over Kampong Glam, and Chinatown's temples sit a short walk from the towers of the financial district. At night, Gardens by the Bay lights up beside the water, and a rooftop bar above the bay makes a fitting finish.

Wander Singapore's old neighbourhoods

Marina Bay is the postcard, but Chinatown and Kampong Glam show the city's character.

  • Marina Bay and the gardens

The waterfront skyline, the Supertrees and cooled domes of Gardens by the Bay, and evening light shows over the water.

  • Chinatown and Kampong Glam

Restored shophouse streets, temples and mosques, with hawker centres serving some of the best food in the city.

Plan Singapore around the showers

It is warm all year, with heavier rain at the turn of the year.

  • JanuaryMixed

Wet and slightly cooler, with Lunar New Year lights in Chinatown in some years.

  • FebruaryGood

One of the drier, sunnier months, a good time for walking the city.

  • AprilGood

Hot and humid, with thunderstorms most afternoons.

  • MayGood

Hot, with storms in the afternoon and clear mornings.

  • JuneGood

Warmer and a little drier, a good month for the gardens at night.

  • JulyGood

Mostly dry and hot, a good month for evenings on the waterfront.

  • AugustGood

National Day celebrations on 9 August, with fireworks over Marina Bay.

Fly non-stop into Changi

Changi has non-stop flights from Europe, the Gulf, North America and every major Australian city.

  • Sydney (non-stop): about 8 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): about 7.5 h
  • Brisbane (non-stop): about 8 h
  • Perth (non-stop): about 5 h
  • Los Angeles (non-stop): about 17 h
  • London (non-stop): about 13.5 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 7.5 h

Head on to Bali or Malaysia

Bali is about two and a half hours away and Kuala Lumpur about one, both easy additions.

  • Malaysia

Langkawi's islands, rainforest and the street food of Penang.

  • Indonesia

Bali's rice terraces and temples, with Java's volcanoes beyond.

  • Thailand

Bangkok's temples, the cool north and islands on two seas.

Know the Singapore rules before you land

What is the Singapore Arrival Card?+
It is a free online form every visitor completes within three days before arriving, so avoid scam sites that charge a fee. Visa rules depend on your passport, and Australian passport holders, for example, do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
When is the wettest time in Singapore?+
Singapore is warm all year, with the heaviest rain usually late in the year during the northeast monsoon. Showers tend to pass quickly, so your travel expert keeps an indoor option in each day.
Are three nights in Singapore enough?+
Yes. Three nights covers Gardens by the Bay, the hawker centres, Kampong Glam and Little India without hurry. Two nights works as a stopover on the way to Europe.
Which hawker centres should we try first?+
Maxwell and Lau Pa Sat sit close to the business district, while Old Airport Road and Tiong Bahru Market are where locals queue. A food guide takes you to the stalls with the longest local lines.
Are Singapore's rules as strict as people say?+
Fines apply for littering, jaywalking and eating or drinking on the MRT. Follow the signs and you will find the city calm and very safe.
Where should we celebrate a birthday in Singapore?+
A rooftop dinner over Marina Bay or a table at one of the city's acclaimed restaurants suits a birthday or anniversary. Tell us the occasion and your travel expert books the view.
Can we visit Sentosa on a short stay?+
Yes. Sentosa is about 15 minutes from the city by cable car or road, with beaches and Fort Siloso. Half a day suits most visitors on a three-night stay.
