Go where few ships can

Expedition ships are built for remote waters, with the guides and small boats to take you ashore.

  • Small ships, remote places

Smaller ships reach bays and islands that large cruise ships cannot, with fewer people ashore.

  • Expert guides on board

Naturalists, historians and marine biologists lead landings and talks on the wildlife and history you see.

  • Landings by small boat

Inflatable boat landings take you onto beaches, ice and rocky shores where there is no harbour.

  • Wildlife up close

See penguins, whales, sea lions and giant tortoises in places where they have little fear of people.

Choose your expedition waters

These are the countries where our expedition cruises begin or call.

  • Argentina

Ushuaia is the main departure point for voyages to Antarctica and South Georgia.

  • Ecuador

Galápagos routes reach islands famous for wildlife found nowhere else.

  • Spain

Atlantic and Mediterranean voyages call at ports and islands rarely reached by big ships.

  • Italy

Voyages around Italy reach small islands and quiet harbours along its coast.

  • Portugal

Atlantic coast voyages call at historic ports and island groups.

  • United States of America

Autumn voyages link New England and Canada for the turning leaves.

Questions travellers ask

What is an expedition cruise?+
An expedition cruise sails to remote places on a small ship, with landings by small boat and a team of expert guides. Days are shaped by weather and wildlife rather than a fixed port schedule.
How does an expedition cruise compare with an ocean cruise?+
An ocean cruise usually calls at established ports on larger ships with set timings. An expedition cruise uses smaller ships with flexible plans, more time ashore in wild places and guides who lead every landing.
When is the season for Antarctic expedition cruises?+
Antarctic voyages run during the southern summer, from about November to March. Penguin chicks hatch around December and January, and whales are often seen later in the season.
How fit do we need to be for an expedition cruise?+
You need to be able to step in and out of small boats and walk on uneven ground. Crew help at every landing, and you can choose how active each outing is.
Is the Drake Passage crossing rough?+
The crossing from Ushuaia to Antarctica takes about two days and can be rough. Some voyages fly over the passage to shorten the journey, and your travel expert can explain the options.
What should we pack for an expedition cruise?+
Layers, waterproof outer clothing and good walking shoes are essential, and many ships provide boots and a parka. Your travel expert shares a packing list for your voyage.
