Taste Argentina, then head south for the ice

Arrive in Argentina hungry, because Buenos Aires rewards it. Dinner rarely starts before ten, the cafés of Recoleta have been pouring coffee for over a century, and a milonga in San Telmo shows you tango as locals dance it. A few days later you can be in Mendoza, tasting Malbec with a sommelier while snow sits on the Andes above the vines.

Then the country opens up. In the far south, the glaciers of Los Glaciares National Park crack and fall into Lago Argentino, and the trails around El Chaltén climb towards the granite of Mount Fitz Roy. Ushuaia, the southernmost city on the map, is where many Antarctic voyages begin. Up north, the Iberá Wetlands hide caimans and marsh deer, and the falls at Iguazú fill the air with spray.

Try Argentina's music, wine and ice

Add any of these to your days in Argentina, and we will time it with your hotels.

  • Learn to tango in San Telmo

Behind plain doors in San Telmo, violins and bandoneóns fill the old dance halls. A professional dancer teaches you the steps, then you watch the locals take the floor.

  • Walk on the Perito Moreno Glacier

Strap on crampons and cross the ridges and crevasses of Perito Moreno with a mountain guide, in the heart of Los Glaciares National Park.

  • A private tango class at Café Tortoni

Take a three-hour tango lesson in a private room of Café Tortoni, the city's landmark coffee house on Avenida de Mayo.

  • Ride out with the gauchos

Visit a working estancia outside the city, meet the gauchos in the stables and ride with them across the open grassland.

  • Taste Malbec with a winemaker

A Mendoza winemaker pours from his own cellar and explains why high-altitude vineyards give Malbec its depth and colour.

Choose your corner of Argentina

Each region sits a flight apart, so most trips pick two or three and give them time.

  • Buenos Aires

Grand boulevards, tango in San Telmo, the colourful houses of La Boca and long dinners that start late, the city to begin and end in.

  • Mendoza wine country

Vineyards at the foot of the Andes, where Malbec is the local grape and the snowy peaks fill the view from every tasting room.

  • Iberá Wetlands and the north

Lagoons and marshes in the northeast, home to capybaras, caimans and marsh deer, reached from Posadas near the old Jesuit missions.

  • El Calafate and El Chaltén

The Perito Moreno Glacier near El Calafate, then the walking trails of El Chaltén below Mount Fitz Roy in the far south.

  • Ushuaia and Antarctica

The southernmost city in the world on the Beagle Channel, and the port for expedition voyages to the South Shetland Islands and Antarctica.

Travel Argentina by sea or by air

Small group tours cover the classic route, while expedition cruises and private jet journeys reach further.

  • Small group tours

Share tango nights in Buenos Aires and Patagonian trails with a few others and one guide throughout.

  • Cruises

Sail out of Ushuaia on an expedition ship bound for Antarctica or the channels of Tierra del Fuego.

Ask before you fly to Argentina

What do I need to land in Buenos Aires?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, can stay up to 90 days as tourists without a visa, with a valid passport and a return or onward ticket. Officials may also ask for proof of accommodation and funds. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
When are Patagonia's glaciers and trails at their best?+
Patagonia opens properly in the southern summer, when the days are long and the lodges around El Calafate and El Chaltén are all open. Spring and autumn are quieter and cooler, and many hotels in the far south close through winter.
How many days do we need for Buenos Aires, Mendoza and Patagonia?+
Allow about two weeks to give each of the three a few nights, as each sits a domestic flight apart. With ten days, most travellers choose Buenos Aires and Patagonia and save Mendoza for another trip.
Should we see Iguazú Falls from the Argentine or Brazilian side?+
The Argentine side has the longer walkways and takes you right to the edge of the Devil's Throat. The Brazilian side gives the wide panorama, so a day on each is ideal if you can spare it.
Can we add Antarctica to a trip to Argentina?+
Yes. Most Antarctic Peninsula voyages sail from Ushuaia and take about two days to cross the Drake Passage each way. Your travel expert books your nights in Buenos Aires and Ushuaia around the ship.
Where can we see tango danced properly in Buenos Aires?+
A milonga in San Telmo or Almagro shows tango as locals dance it, late in the evening and often past midnight. For a polished stage show with dinner, your travel expert reserves good seats at one of the city's long-running tango halls.
Where should we stay for an Argentine honeymoon?+
Many couples split their time between a lakeside lodge near Bariloche and a vineyard hotel in Mendoza's Uco Valley. Your travel expert can add a private asado at an estancia or a Malbec tasting set up for the two of you.
