Budapest, Vienna and Prague

10 days · 9 nights

Budapest → Bratislava → Vienna → Moravia → Prague

You begin with three nights in Budapest, crossing between hilltop Buda and the grand avenues of Pest. A guided walk in Bratislava leads on to Vienna's palaces, galleries and an intimate concert at the Mozarthaus. A winery lunch in Moravia carries you to Prague for its Castle District and Jewish Quarter.

Soak in Budapest's thermal baths

Budapest sits on more than a hundred thermal springs, and an afternoon in one of its old bathhouses is the best way to feel the city. At the Széchenyi, locals play chess in the steaming outdoor pools beneath a yellow neo-baroque palace, and at the Rudas an Ottoman dome arches over the water. Afterwards, a grand café on the Pest side serves cake beneath gilded ceilings.

As dusk falls, the Danube becomes the centrepiece. Parliament glows on the Pest bank, and across the river the towers of Fisherman's Bastion look down from Castle Hill. Beyond the capital, Lake Balaton is ringed by wine hills and summer villas, and the river carries on west towards Vienna, which makes Budapest a natural start for a Danube cruise.

Explore Budapest with a private guide

Days your travel expert can plan into your stay, on either bank of the river and beyond.

  • Pest's opera, synagogue and basilica

Tour the restored Opera House, then the Great Synagogue and Jewish Museum. Continue to the Millennium Monument and finish at St Stephen's Basilica.

  • Castle Hill and the Buda bank

Walk Castle Hill's cobbled lanes past the former Royal Palace and Matthias Church, where Hungarian kings were crowned. End with the view from Fisherman's Bastion and Gellért Hill.

  • Szentendre's artists and lanes

Spend a morning in Szentendre, a riverside town of baroque houses and craft shops just north of Budapest. The Margit Kovács Museum holds her ceramics and sculpture.

Cross between Buda and Pest

The river splits the capital in two, and each bank has its own character.

  • Buda and Castle Hill

The royal palace, Matthias Church and the Fishermen's Bastion on the hill, with views across the river to Pest.

  • Pest and the Danube

The Parliament, St Stephen's Basilica, grand coffee houses and the Széchenyi thermal baths in the City Park.

Go for markets or for music

Advent markets fill December, while May and September suit the baths and the river best.

Fly into Budapest and start on the Danube

  • Sydney (one stop): about 23 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 23 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 24 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 20 h

Sail on to Vienna

Austria is a few hours upriver, and many cruises call there next.

  • Austria

Vienna and the vineyards of the Wachau on the Danube.

Clear up the details before Budapest

Will we need a visa for a Danube cruise from Budapest?+
Not if you hold an Australian, UK, US or Canadian passport. Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany are all in the Schengen area, so these passports travel visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across them. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Which Budapest thermal bath suits a first visit?+
The Széchenyi has large outdoor pools that stay hot through winter, and the Rudas has a 16th-century Ottoman dome and a rooftop pool over the Danube. The Art Nouveau Gellért is closed for a long renovation, so your travel expert books one of the others.
When is the Danube at its best for a cruise?+
Mild weather makes late spring and early autumn the most comfortable for time on deck and in port. Christmas market sailings run in late November and December, trading warmth for lights and mulled wine.
How many days should we spend in Budapest around a cruise?+
Two or three nights lets you see Castle Hill, Parliament and a bath at an easy pace. Add a fourth for a day trip to the Danube Bend towns of Szentendre and Visegrád.
What is a good way to mark an anniversary in Budapest?+
A dinner cruise on the Danube as Parliament and the bridges light up suits an anniversary well. Your travel expert can also book a box at the Hungarian State Opera on Andrássy Avenue.
Is Budapest walkable, or do we need transport?+
The centre is walkable, though Castle Hill is steep, so take the funicular up from the Chain Bridge. Trams along the river and the old yellow metro line cover longer distances.
What Hungarian wines should we try?+
Tokaji Aszú is the famous sweet wine from the north-east, and Egri Bikavér, or Bull's Blood, is the classic red from Eger. Wine bars in Budapest pour both, along with whites from the volcanic hills around Lake Balaton.
Which countries does a Danube cruise from Budapest pass through?+
Most voyages from Budapest sail upriver through Slovakia and Austria, calling at Bratislava and Vienna, and some continue into Germany. The Wachau Valley, between Melk and Krems in Austria, is the most scenic stretch.
