South Korea’s Gyeongbokgung Palace Opens for Weddings for the First Time in History

South Korea’s Gyeongbokgung Palace Opens for Weddings for the First Time in History

For the global bride seeking a destination wedding venue that whispers of ancient dynasties and "Palace Greatly Blessed by Heaven," the search may have just ended in the heart of Seoul.

In a move that has sent ripples through the international luxury travel and wedding sectors, the National Palace Museum of Korea has announced an unprecedented "Outdoor Wedding Support Program."

For the first time in modern history, the hallowed grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the crown jewel of Korea’s Five Grand Palaces, will be open for private wedding ceremonies.

Historical wonder

Built in 1395, Gyeongbokgung was the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. It is a site of immense cultural sovereignty, usually reserved for state visits and historical preservation. To exchange vows here makes one’s wedding a rare and historical event.

Specifically, the venue is the museum’s Ginkgo Tree Shelter, an area famed for its ethereal beauty. In October, the peak of Korea’s gorgeous autumn, the towering ginkgos transform into a canopy of shimmering, vibrant gold.

For 2026, the museum will host a strictly limited number of couples, offering an intimacy and prestige that money quite literally cannot buy.

Dreamy details

This doesn’t make the special venue a high-volume wedding factory; the program is designed for exclusivity and cultural promotion at a controlled pace and moderated setting.

According to Korean media, ceremonies will only take place from the second to the fifth week of October. There will only be two slots per day (11 a.m. and 3 p.m.) on Saturdays and Sundays.

A curated capacity of approximately 100 guests will be allowed, perfect for the "boutique destination" trend favored by modern couples.

As part of the inclusions, selected couples receive free access to the outdoor venue, an indoor banquet hall, and a 1 million won (approx. $1,100 AUD) stipend for equipment.

Heritage goes global

For Australian couples and global wedding planners, this represents a pivot in the "destination wedding" hierarchy. While Lake Como and the South of France have long held the title for prestige, Seoul is positioning its heritage sites to compete on a global stage.

The initiative, led by the Korea Heritage Service, aims to promote "social values" and address the era's low birth rates by making high-prestige heritage accessible. For the destination couple, this offers a "Once-in-a-Lifetime" narrative: the chance to be among the first in the world to wed at a site where Joseon kings were once crowned.

For The Modern Romantic

Whether you opt for a Traditional Korean Ceremony (think vibrant Hanboks against grey stone architecture) or a General Ceremony with a modern twist, the backdrop of the palace walls and the silhouette of Bugaksan Mountain provides a visual drama that no floral installation could ever replicate.
