The best proposal views in the world tend to come with a crowd. Each of these twelve names a specific place to stand, and where a private option exists, from a boat with no one else on board to an island only resort guests can reach, how to book it.

Villa del Balbianello sits on a peninsula near Lenno, with terraced gardens, statues and an open loggia looking out over the lake. You can't drive there: arrive by taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno or by private boat, or walk the 1km path up through the trees.
Visits must be booked, and the FAI, which runs the villa, also hires out the Loggia Durini and the lake terrace for exclusive receptions and ceremonies. For a sunset on the water afterwards, Bellagio Boat Tour runs private boat tours from March to mid-November. If the wedding is next, start with our Lake Como wedding cost guide.

High above the Amalfi Coast in Ravello, the gardens of Villa Cimbrone end at the Terrace of Infinity, right at the edge of the crag, looking out over the sea. The gardens are open to the public every day from 9am to 5:30pm, with last entry at 5pm, and the hotel asks visitors to check for occasional closures before they come. Villa Cimbrone is also a hotel, so ask about garden access when you book a stay. Our Italy destination guide covers the rest of the coast.

For the caldera at sunset without sharing a viewpoint, book a table of your own. Canaves Oia Suites offers private dining tailored to the occasion, with views over the caldera, the Aegean and the volcano from its sunset terrace. Book it for the hour before sunset, so the ring comes out as the sky turns. See our Greece destination guide for where else to stay.

Pont Alexandre III, with its gilded statues, connects the Champs-Élysées to Les Invalides, and was designed so it wouldn't block the view of either.
The bridge is a public street, so for a private moment, take to the river instead. Paris Boat Club, listed by the Paris region's official tourism site, offers a private boat with a skipper past the Eiffel Tower, the Musée d'Orsay, Notre-Dame and the Pont des Arts. Trips run year-round between 10am and 9pm, so check sunset times before booking a summer evening. More French settings are in our France guide.

Riffelsee sits at 2,757 metres, a 10-minute walk from Rotenboden station on the Gornergrat railway, and on a still day the Matterhorn appears twice, once in the sky and once in the water. The reflection is best with no wind, usually in the morning or evening. The first Gornergrat train leaves Zermatt at 7am in summer and 8:24am in winter, so check the timetable for your dates.
Check the path is open before you set out. Beyond Zermatt, our Switzerland guide maps the rest of the Alps.

Quinta do Crasto serves lunch or dinner on a terrace built from local schist, with a panoramic view over the Douro River. Bookings go through the estate's wine tourism team, so mention the occasion when you reserve. Lisbon and the Algarve are in our Portugal guide.

On Bali's southern tip, the Uluwatu cliffs drop straight into the Indian Ocean. Jumeirah Bali's open-air Mantra Pavilion sits right on top of them. Its cliffside romantic dinner is a candlelit dinner for two at sunset, priced at IDR 6,000,000++ per couple until 31 December 2026, and the pavilion can also be booked for private gatherings of up to five. For another clifftop stay, read our Bulgari Resort Bali guide.

Likuliku Lagoon Resort takes guests to Mociu, a tiny uninhabited island 15 minutes away by boat, for a sunrise hike to its summit or a picnic on its private beach. The island is a protected nature reserve, open only to the resort's guests, and trips run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, weather and tides permitting. Check the wording before you book a sandbank picnic elsewhere in Fiji, because some sandbanks are public. For more ways to propose in Fiji, see our Fiji proposal guide.

Few views are as private as a Maldives sandbank, with open ocean on every side. At Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa, the private sandbank dinner is offered once each evening to one couple, starting just before sunset, at USD 475 per couple. Book well ahead, since only one couple goes each night. For the rest of the trip, see our list of things to do in the Maldives.

At The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, you can book a private dinner in the Al Wadi Tower, a traditional Arabic watchtower, with six courses served high above the dunes. The emirate's other resorts are in our Ras Al Khaimah guide.

Ko Hong is one of Phang Nga Bay's best canoeing spots, with lagoons you reach through sea caves, according to this guide to Ao Phang Nga National Park, which also notes the park closes from mid-May to mid-October. Koyao Island Resort offers a private yacht charter with no fixed itinerary, so ask whether your charter can include Ko Hong in Phang Nga Bay, and plan around the park's closed season. If the trip becomes a honeymoon, here are ten things to do in Thailand.

Tulum's beaches face the turquoise Caribbean Sea. La Zebra Tulum includes a private beachfront dinner in its five-night couples package, under the stars with the sea as the backdrop, and can prepare the room for a proposal too. The beach isn't private, so the private part is your table. Our Mexico guide has more along the Caribbean side.
Book directly and get the details in writing. Ask what "private" includes, whether that's the whole boat, the terrace or the island. Book a photographer for the moment if you want it captured, and tell the hotel or operator it's a proposal so they can keep the ring a secret. For ideas closer to home, see our proposal ideas.
