A destination bridal shower is either a shower held at home for a bride who is marrying abroad, or a short trip that turns the shower itself into a getaway. Either way, the host plans around travel: the date, a guest list of people invited to the wedding, and gifts the couple won't have to pack. Plan both the same way, date and guests first, and leave the wedding week abroad to Wedded Concierge.
You don't need one, but it is worth hosting when many people close to the bride can't travel to the wedding. A shower at home lets them share in the lead-up without a flight, a hotel and time off work.
Keep the guest list to people invited to the wedding. Vogue's guide to bridal showers lists the bridal party, close family and friends attending the wedding as the usual guests. Asking someone to bring a gift to a shower for a wedding they aren't invited to puts them in an awkward spot. If you're thinking of a mixed group, our guide on whether men should be invited to the bridal shower covers the options.

If most of the bride's friends are travelling for the wedding, you can hold the shower there. A brunch or afternoon tea at the resort early in the wedding week is the simplest option, because guests are already in one place.
Keep it optional and close to where everyone is staying, since guests are paying for flights and accommodation too. Schedule it on a different day from the welcome party, or fold the two together if the guest lists match. Our guide on whether you need a wedding welcome party explains how the two events differ.
A weekend away with the bride a few months before the wedding is the other route. Pick somewhere easy to reach from where most guests live, and agree the budget before anyone books.
Anyone close to the bride can host. Vogue notes that the mother of the bride, another family member or the bridal party often takes it on, and that hosts usually split the cost. For a shower held as a trip, agree early which costs the hosts cover and which each guest pays.
The shower is one event in a longer trip. Our destination wedding checklist sets out the timeline from booking to the wedding day, and our destination wedding packages show venues abroad.
