The 50th wedding anniversary is the golden anniversary. Wikipedia's anniversary list gives gold as its traditional gift, with the yellow rose and violets as its flowers. It's rarer than it sounds: the US Census Bureau's 2011 release found that 6% of currently married couples in the US had passed it.

A golden anniversary works best when it's planned around the couple: a long lunch with a short formal programme, a few real gold finishes on the table instead of a gold colour scheme, and their 50 years of story at the centre of the room.
You're probably organising this for parents, in-laws, grandparents or a partner, so start with the couple's comfort and work outward. The eight steps apply wherever you live, and Wedded Wonderland's local venue picks, prices and official messages for Australia, the UAE, the UK and the US follow them.
Gather these five things before you ask a single venue for a quote:
The couple's stamina: How long each can sit, stand and follow a conversation in a noisy room, and whether either uses a wheelchair, a hearing aid or regular medication.
One decision-maker, one budget holder and one day-of lead: Agree these before quotes arrive, so the host isn't also running the room, and settle what a per-head figure must include (minimum spend, service charge and tax).
A guest list with dietary and travel needs: Collect halal, alcohol-free, vegetarian, gluten-free and soft-food needs by name, and note which older guests are flying in and how many young children are coming.
The marriage certificate: Some official messages ask for proof of the marriage, so find it now.
A date clear of clashes: Check public and school holidays, religious fasts and the hottest or wettest weeks where the party will be held.

Work through these eight steps in order, since each one sets up the next:
Let the couple's health and temperament decide how much of the day is a surprise. A partial surprise is the gentler choice: tell them the date and the dress code and keep the guest list secret, so they can dress for the day, rest the night before and walk in knowing something is coming.

Ask each of them privately how they feel about their wedding year. A wedding held during a war, a hard year or without a parent present changes what belongs in a speech. If either is expected to say a few words, tell them in advance.
Plan a lunch of three to four hours, starting around midday and finishing by about 4pm, so the couple arrive rested and leave in daylight. Keep the formal part (the welcome, the speeches, the toast and the cake) inside 90 minutes, then let the couple leave first with a proper send-off.

If family are flying in, a small dinner the night before gives them time with the couple without stretching the main day. If the date falls during a religious fast, hold the meal once the fast breaks. Seat young children near the door, with a sitter and a play corner.
Ask each venue to confirm these points in writing before you sign:
The named car set-down point, and a covered, step-free route from there to the door.
A step-free route from the door to the table, and whether any lift fits a wheelchair with someone beside it.
An accessible bathroom near the room, not two floors away.
The surface underfoot, including gravel, cobbles, lawn and terrace steps.
Chairs with arms for the couple's table, and seats during drinks instead of high tables.
A quiet room nearby where the couple can rest or take medication.

Many venue pages list capacities but no access detail or price, so send the questions first, then visit with the couple on a quiet day. Get the minimum spend, service charge and deposit terms in writing, plus a date-change clause, so the deposit moves with you if a guest of honour falls ill. An insurer can quote event cancellation cover too.
Hearing matters as much as stairs. Book a handheld or lapel microphone for every speech, keep the music off during the speeches and low through the first course, and seat the couple with their backs to a wall, facing the room. Ask whether the room has a hearing loop rather than assuming it does.
Gold looks its best as a material: brushed brass candlesticks, gold-rimmed glass and china, ivory or champagne linen, garden roses in white or apricot, and plenty of candlelight. On the invitation, one line in gold foil on heavy cream card is enough.

Two pieces show the standard to aim for. The Moser Royal wine glass is hand-blown from lead-free crystal with a fine strip of 24-carat gold at the rim. A set of Bernardaud Ecume Or service plates under the first course does the work of a whole gold theme.
Leave out the glitter "50" signs, metallic tablecloths, gold balloons and cake toppers.
Pick one dish from the original wedding menu and name it on the menu card with the year they married, instead of recreating the whole meal. Ask a trio or string quartet to play the couple's first-dance song during the toast.

Scan the old photographs a few weeks before and return the originals the same day. Frame one or two per table, set the wedding photograph on an easel at the entrance, and skip a looping slideshow, which competes with conversation.
For family who have died, choose one quiet element: a candle, a line in a speech or a photograph among the others. Brief the photographer on anyone who must not be pictured, and share the photographs in a private gallery.
Three or four speakers is plenty, in an agreed order: one of the children, a sibling or old friend, one grandchild, then the couple if they want to speak. Brief each speaker on the limit a week ahead, and give one trusted person the job of steering the guest who's likely to overrun. In a two-language family, let each speaker choose a language and close with a line in the other.

Find your country's official message and its request window under "Where you celebrate", and put the window in the calendar once the date is set.

For Catholic couples, a papal blessing parchment is requested only through the Vatican's Office of Papal Charities, four to six months before the anniversary, for €21 to €30 plus delivery. If the couple live outside their home country, ask its embassy whether it sends anniversary messages.
Leave a rest day before any travel, and keep flights to about four hours or less, or choose somewhere a short drive away. Ask the couple to check with their doctor that they're fit to fly, and choose travel insurance that covers their age and any pre-existing conditions. Book private transfers and ground-floor or lift-served rooms.

For a family based in Europe, or a couple happy to fly further, Tuscany suits a slower trip, and our Europe venue collection is a place to browse more. Castiglion del Bosco, A Rosewood Hotel, has 42 suites and 11 villas on a 5,000-acre wine estate near Montalcino. Its page gives no access detail, so ask for a ground-floor suite and a step-free route to the restaurant before you book. Above Florence, you can enquire through our listing for Villa San Michele, A Belmond Hotel, in Fiesole.
The gifts that last are records of the 50 years: a bound book of letters from the children and grandchildren, a framed print of the wedding photograph beside one taken on the day, or the trip itself.

To honour the gold tradition as well, add one fine gold piece, or a leather album to keep those records in. Two current examples, with the Bulgari price in each market below:
Bulgari Serpenti Viper bracelet: An 18-carat yellow gold bracelet from Bulgari's Serpenti line, sold on Bulgari's own sites in all four markets.
Aspinal of London photo album: The 12-inch leather album is handmade in England with 50 acid-free pages and two lines of personalisation on the cover, priced by delivery country.
For more ideas, see our guide to anniversary gifts for him. Check the gold before you pay. Wherever you buy, ask for the carat, weight, maker and a written invoice or certificate.
A run sheet for 60 to 120 guests, with the couple in their late seventies:
11.30am: Family arrives, and the day-of lead checks the quiet room and the microphone.
12pm: The couple arrives at the set-down point by the door, with drinks served to seated guests.
12.45pm: First course, with the music low.
2pm: Speeches after the main course.
2.30pm: The toast and the cake, with the first-dance song.
3.30pm: The couple's send-off, and everyone else can stay on.

Work backwards from the date:
9 to 12 months out: Book the venue and the family's rooms, especially for a peak weekend.
Once the venue contract is signed: Send save-the-dates to anyone flying in, and say who is paying for transfers.
8 to 10 weeks out: Send the invitations, and check each official message window from step 7.
2 to 3 weeks out: Give the caterer final numbers and the dietary register.
Prices and rules change, so confirm each one when you book.
In Sydney, Four Seasons Hotel Sydney seats 300 with in-house catering, and Aria's Wharf Room seats 40 at one long table. Catalina Rose Bay publishes its price: a $250 per person minimum spend for groups of 20 to 40, plus a 10% service fee. Bathers' Pavilion seats 100 upstairs; it and Aria give no price or lift detail.

Sydney's April is typically its fourth wettest month, so plan an indoor fallback. For the trip, Peppers Hunter Valley in Pokolbin is a drive, not a flight, with wheelchair-accessible rooms.
The Prime Minister and the Governor-General each send a message at 50 to citizens and permanent residents. Request them through the Prime Minister's department or your MP, with the certificate or a statutory declaration, two to three months ahead. The department can post them to another address to keep the surprise.
The Bulgari bracelet is AUD 12,400 on its Australian site.
At Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach, Lulwa seats 70, Jumana 50 and Jawharah 40. The Dana Ballroom (320) is up a grand staircase, and the hotel's page mentions no lift or prices, so ask about both. In Downtown Dubai, Jamavar's Dining Room seats 72 on exclusive hire, with a semi-private area for 25, and its page gives no price or access detail. In summer, ask for valet at the door and an air-conditioned route to the room.

In Ramadan, hold an iftar after sunset, and ask for an alcohol-free toast if the family prefers one. We know of no official UAE message for a 50th, so ask your home country's embassy. Check every relative's passport on the foreign ministry's visa list before flights are booked, since some, Lebanon's among them, need a visa.
The Bulgari bracelet is AED 30,100 including taxes on its UAE site.
In London, Rosewood London's Chairman's Boardrooms seat up to 16 for lunch, and its private venues, including the Dining Room and the Terrace, take up to 90 guests. In the Cotswolds, Lords of the Manor seats 70 in its restaurant, or 90 with the Atrium, and the couple can stay on. Neither page states a price or access detail. Even July can be damp: the Met Office logged 74.2mm of rain in July 2025, so ask for a covered route.

The King's messages start at the 60th, so there's no royal card at 50. A Church of England thanksgiving for marriage can be held in any church, with the couple's rings blessed and no statutory fee. Hallmarking is a legal requirement for gold of 1 gram and over, so look for the mark. The Bulgari bracelet is £6,500 on its UK site.
Browse more in our North America venue collection. In Manhattan, Union Square Cafe's Park and Irving Room seats 40, or 100 on a buyout, and Gramercy Tavern's private dining room seats 20, or 120 on a buyout. Neither gives a price or access detail.

Wildflower Farms, an Auberge resort 90 minutes from Manhattan, has dining rooms for 24 to 125 and 65 cabins, cottages and suites. A foliage tracker puts peak colour in Dutchess County on 14 to 20 October. For the trip, Troutbeck has three fully accessible ground-floor guestrooms, and its Manor House public rooms take a standard wheelchair.
The White House sends greetings to US citizens at 50. Request it through your member of Congress, six weeks ahead. On US sites, the Bulgari bracelet is USD 7,950 before tax, the Moser glass USD 257, a Bernardaud service plate USD 650 and the Aspinal album USD 450.
Compare venues and suppliers on the Wedded Marketplace, and enquire through their listings. A Wedded Advisor from our travel advisor team can book the couple's hotel stay and the trip afterwards. Wedded Privileges are stay benefits, such as breakfast, credits or an upgrade where available, on eligible bookings through the Virtuoso, Four Seasons and Rosewood Elite programmes, so ask whether a hotel qualifies before you book. If you'd rather be a guest on the day, Wedded Concierge can plan the celebration with you.
Start this week: find the marriage certificate, put the message windows in the calendar, and send the access questions to your first venues.
