The best babymoon destinations are a manageable flight from home, with good medical care nearby and a resort that caters to pregnancy, from prenatal massage to mocktails. The Maldives, Fiji, the Great Barrier Reef, Bali, Los Cabos and Crete all have resorts with babymoon offers. Many people find the middle of pregnancy, between four and six months, the most comfortable time to travel.
The NHS notes that many women find the best time to travel is mid-pregnancy, between four and six months. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the risk of obstetric complications is greatest in the first and third trimesters. Talk to your doctor or midwife about your dates before you book anything, and plan the trip for the weeks when you are likely to feel your best.
Airlines decide for themselves how late in pregnancy you can fly. The CDC says most commercial airlines allow pregnant passengers to fly until 36 weeks, but rules vary, so check your airline's rules for every flight on the trip, including the flight home.
Check health advice for your destination as well. The CDC advises pregnant travellers to reconsider travel to areas with a Zika outbreak and to avoid or delay travel to malaria areas where possible. The NHS lists the Caribbean, the Pacific islands and parts of Asia among areas affected by Zika, which includes several destinations below, so check the current advice for your exact destination before you book.
Buy travel insurance that covers pregnancy, care during labour and a change to your return date. The CDC also recommends cover for medical evacuation, and advises against scuba diving while pregnant.
Milaidhoo Island in Baa Atoll offers a babymoon package with a 60-minute couples spa treatment tailored to the mother-to-be, a private film under the stars and a coral frame planted for your baby, with updates on how it grows. It requires a minimum four-night stay and is only available when you book direct.
Four Seasons also offers babymoon experiences at its two Maldives resorts: an Ayurvedic programme at Landaa Giraavaru, and a naturopathic consultation with sound healing and breathwork at Kuda Huraa.
Vomo Island's babymoon package includes a couples spa session, unlimited mocktails, pregnancy-tailored menus and an adults-only pool, and there is a doctor on the island. The package requires a minimum seven-night stay.
For Australian travellers, Lizard Island avoids a long-haul flight. Its babymoon package adds a massage for two, a marine explorer tour and a private dinghy trip with a picnic to a minimum two-night stay. The massage is only available after the first trimester.
Four Seasons offers babymoon experiences at both of its Bali resorts. At Sayan, near Ubud, there is a four-course dinner; at Jimbaran Bay, pregnancy yoga, meditation and spa treatments.
At Four Seasons Koh Samui, the babymoon experience includes a Buddhist blessing and a private chef's table dinner.
Chileno Bay, an Auberge resort, offers a two-day babymoon itinerary with a prenatal massage, a sound bowl session, a Himalayan salt room, private restorative yoga, two dinners and a breakfast. The resort lists it as available year-round.
Etéreo, also from Auberge, offers a two-night babymoon with a prenatal massage, an in-room bath ritual, a beach dinner and sunrise yoga. It is booked by phone rather than online, and the resort asks for your due date in advance.
Nana Princess on Crete offers a babymoon package with a pregnancy massage in a private spa suite, breakfast in your suite and extra pillows from the pillow menu. A room upgrade and early check-in or late check-out are included when available.
The Cove Eleuthera's babymoon package includes a 60-minute couples massage, two shorter massages by the pool or on the beach and daily breakfast. It requires a minimum three-night stay booked at least seven days ahead.
Four Seasons Resort Lanai lists babymoon experiences rather than a fixed package, including a prenatal massage after the first trimester, an adults-only pool and a private five-course dinner under the stars.
Book through a luxury travel adviser and the same room often comes with extras. Virtuoso, a network of luxury travel agencies, has listed benefits such as an upgrade when available, breakfast for two, early check-in and late check-out, and an extra such as a spa treatment. Rosewood's Elite programme for travel advisers lists daily breakfast and a one-category upgrade on arrival, subject to availability.
Babymoon packages change often and rarely show an end date, so confirm what is included when you book, and ask for any minimum stay in writing.
