Mark your calendars for the biggest night in fashion this Monday 6th of May, the Met Gala. With everyone buzzing over who will be on the guest list, what Anna Wintour has picked as the Met Gala theme and which designers our favorite celebrities will be wearing, here’s your inside scoop on the fashion and beauty trends to watch out for, as well as our 2024 Met Gala fashion predictions!
This year’s Met Gala will be celebrating the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. Spanning over 400 years of fashion history, the new exhibition includes rare pieces by fashion luminaries such as Schiaparelli, Dior, and Givenchy. Highlights include garments too delicate for wear, like a Charles Frederick Worth ball gown from 1877, which will be showcased through video animation, light projection, AI, and CGI.
For 2024, the gala theme is inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story, The Garden of Time. While at first glance, you would think the steps of the Metropolitan Museum would be graced with dozens of floral designs, but Anna Wintour has described the dress code as representing “fleeting beauty”. So, while we’re sure to see floral pieces from all of the top fashion houses, we’ll likely see some references to time, nature and fleeting moments of beauty.
On February 15, it was announced that Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth will be Anna Wintour’s co-chairs for the night. Celebrities Gwendoline Christie, La La Anthony, and Ashley Graham will co-host the red carpet events, while social media personality Emma Chamberlain returns as Vogue‘s special correspondent, bringing her quirky charm to the red carpet interviews.
The Met Gala sets the scene for upcoming fashion, beauty and bridal trends, so what can we expect from ‘The Garden of Time’? While the 2023 Met Gala theme paid homage to late designer Karl Lagerfeld and translated to a sea of black and white, mixed with tweed and pearls, the Met Gala 2024 theme is a celebration of the natural world. We’re already picturing hues of pinks and green, coupled with delicate hair and makeup. From fresh just-pinched cheeks to floral accessories, we’re sure to see red carpet favorites like Kim Kardashian opt for a softer, more ingenue approach to match the Met Gala theme.
With confirmation of the celebrities announced as co-chairs and co-hosts, we’ll be seeing favorites like Zendaya and Jennifer Lopez interpret the 2024 Met Gala theme. For Swifites hoping to catch a glimpse of couple-of-the-moment at the Met Gala, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, it looks like the Era’s Tour star might be making her return to the red carpet alone, as it has been confirmed that she is on the guest list.
While we don’t have any confirmation on the Kardashian-Jenners, it would be a shock if we don’t see the whole Krew.
Unfortunately it sounds as though Met Gala favorite, Jared Leto, will be skipping this year due to prior commitments. So, there won’t be any second heads or full cat costumes!
