Hear the trumpet call over Kraków

Sit at a café on Kraków's market square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, and each hour a trumpeter plays from the tower of St Mary's Basilica. Wawel Castle stands above the river a short walk away, and Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine hangs in the Czartoryski Museum. South of the city, the Wieliczka salt mine has a chapel carved entirely of salt.

Warsaw's Old Town was rebuilt so carefully after the war that it is now UNESCO listed, and today the capital has galleries and restaurants in old courtyards. Gdańsk, on the Baltic, has tall merchant houses along the Motława river and amber shops on Mariacka Street. Beech and pine forests fill the country between the three cities.

Taste and walk Poland with a guide

Days your travel expert can add in Warsaw and around Kraków.

  • Vodka bars of Warsaw

Tour Warsaw's traditional shot bars with a local guide, tasting different vodkas with Polish snacks and learning how the spirit is made.

  • Ojców's castles and limestone crags

Walk or cycle through Ojców National Park north of Kraków, past limestone rock towers to the castles of Ojców and Pieskowa Skała.

  • Eat your way through Warsaw

Follow a food guide through central Warsaw, tasting soups, starters and regional mains before pastries and coffee.

Move between Gdańsk and Kraków

Each city has a different character, with Warsaw between them.

  • Gdańsk

Tall merchant houses on the Long Market and the old crane on the Motława River, a port city on the Baltic.

An Old Town rebuilt brick by brick after the war, royal palaces and parks along the Vistula.

  • Kraków

Europe's largest medieval market square, Wawel Castle above the river and the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz.

Brush up before Kraków

What entry rules apply when visiting Poland?+
It depends on your passport. Poland is in the Schengen area, so Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders, for example, can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries. Expect fingerprints and a photo under the EU Entry/Exit System at your first entry. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Which season suits Kraków, Warsaw and Gdańsk?+
Mild weather in May, June and September suits long walking days in the old towns, and the Baltic coast at Gdańsk is warmest in July and August. Winter is cold and dark, but the old towns are lit for Christmas.
How many days does a Gdańsk to Kraków trip need?+
Ten days gives two or three nights each in Gdańsk, Warsaw and Kraków, with day trips to Wieliczka and Auschwitz-Birkenau from Kraków. Fast trains link each pair of cities in under three hours.
Should we visit Auschwitz-Birkenau from Kraków?+
Many travellers do, and it is a sobering visit of around four hours with a licensed guide. Entry is by timed reservation, so your travel expert books it once your Kraków dates are set.
Is Kraków a romantic city for an anniversary?+
Yes. Try dinner in a vaulted cellar beneath the old town, then a Chopin recital nearby. Your travel expert can reserve both before you arrive.
What is inside the Wieliczka Salt Mine?+
Wieliczka is a UNESCO-listed salt mine just outside Kraków, with chambers, lakes and chapels carved from rock salt. The Chapel of St Kinga, about 100 metres underground, has chandeliers made of salt crystals.
Is Warsaw worth more than a day?+
Yes. The rebuilt Old Town, the Royal Route, the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Warsaw Rising Museum fill two full days. Łazienki Park hosts free Chopin concerts on summer Sundays.
What should we try to eat in Poland?+
Pierogi, filled dumplings, are everywhere, along with żurek, a sour rye soup, and obwarzanek, Kraków's ring-shaped bread sold from street carts. In Gdańsk, try smoked Baltic fish and the local Goldwasser liqueur.
