Wander the baroque lanes of Vilnius

Wander off the main square in Vilnius and you find courtyards, church bells and small cafés tucked behind baroque facades. The old town is one of the largest in Northern Europe and is UNESCO listed, with a white neoclassical cathedral at its heart. The arty Užupis quarter, across a small river, has its own tongue-in-cheek constitution fixed to a wall.

A short drive west, Trakai Castle stands in red brick on an island in its lake, reached by a wooden footbridge. Further north is the Hill of Crosses, where pilgrims have left tens of thousands of crosses. Lithuania is the southernmost of the Baltic states, so it is the natural start for a journey on to Riga and Tallinn.

Visit Vilnius, then head out

The capital is the base, with Trakai and the Hill of Crosses as day trips.

  • Vilnius

One of Europe's largest baroque old towns, with church towers, cobbled lanes and the artists' quarter of Užupis.

  • Trakai

  • The Hill of Crosses

A hillside in the north covered with more than 100,000 crosses, on the road from Vilnius towards Riga.

Fly into Vilnius through a European hub

  • Melbourne (one stop): about 25 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 26 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 21 h

Gdańsk, Warsaw and Kraków's great market square.

Learn the basics before Vilnius

Can we cross between Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia without border checks?+
Yes. All three Baltic states are in the Schengen area, so there are usually no passport checks between them, and Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
What is the weather like in Vilnius through the year?+
Summer days are the warmest and longest, when the old town's courtyards and terraces are at their liveliest. Winter is cold and snowy, with a tall tree and market on Cathedral Square in December.
How long should we stay in Vilnius before heading north?+
Two or three nights covers the old town, Užupis and a half-day trip to Trakai. Add a day to visit the Hill of Crosses on the way to Riga.
Is Lithuania a good place to celebrate an anniversary?+
Yes. Dinner by Lake Galvė facing Trakai Castle, or a hot-air balloon flight over Vilnius old town in summer, suits an anniversary well. Tell your travel expert, and they add it to your days in the capital.
What is Užupis, and why does it have a constitution?+
Užupis is a small artists' quarter across the Vilnia river that declared itself a republic in 1997 as a gentle joke. Its constitution, with lines such as the right to be happy, hangs in many languages on Paupio Street.
What food is Lithuania known for?+
Cepelinai, large potato dumplings filled with meat or curd, are the national dish, and cold pink beetroot soup, šaltibarščiai, is a summer staple. Try kibinai pastries in Trakai, a tradition of the Karaim community there.
How do we get from Vilnius to the Hill of Crosses?+
The Hill of Crosses lies about 12 kilometres north of Šiauliai, a drive of around two and a half hours from Vilnius. Most Baltic routes stop there on the way north to Riga.
Do people speak English in Lithuania?+
English is widely spoken in Vilnius hotels, restaurants and museums, especially by younger Lithuanians. A few words of Lithuanian, such as ačiū for thank you, are always welcomed.
