Eat your way into Mexico's history

Mexico is one of the great food countries, and a trip here starts at the table. In Mexico City, taco stands and tasting menus sit a few streets apart, and the museums and murals of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera fill the days in between. In Oaxaca, mezcal makers roast agave hearts in earth pits for a smoky spirit sipped neat, and the markets smell of chocolate and chilli.

History runs deep across the country. Maya cities such as Chichén Itzá and Palenque rise out of the forest, and colonial Mérida makes an elegant base for the Yucatán. Freshwater cenotes are perfect for a cool swim, and the Caribbean coast has white sand and reefs full of turtles. In the north, the Copper Canyon railway winds through a maze of deep gorges.

Get your Mexico questions answered

How do I enter Mexico as a tourist?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, can stay up to 180 days for tourism, and with a chipped passport you can use the e-gates at major airports, which print a QR code showing your permitted days. You then have 60 days to download your e-tourist card. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Is Mexico safe for travellers?+
Government advice, such as Australia's, urges a high degree of caution in Mexico overall, with stronger warnings for some states. Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Yucatán are well travelled, and your guides and drivers plan each day with local knowledge.
When is the best time for the Yucatán and the Riviera Maya?+
The dry months late in the year and into spring bring warm days and calm seas on the Caribbean coast. Storm risk rises in late summer, and sargassum seaweed can reach some beaches in the warmer months, so we choose hotels with that in mind.
How many days do we need for Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Yucatán?+
Two weeks gives each region four nights, linked by short domestic flights. With ten days, pair Mexico City with either Oaxaca or the Yucatán.
Where should food lovers go in Mexico?+
Mexico City has street stalls and tasting menus within a few blocks, and Oaxaca is the home of mole and mezcal. Your travel expert can add a market walk, a cooking class in a family kitchen or a visit to a mezcal maker in the hills.
Can we visit Chichén Itzá without the crowds?+
Stay the night before at a hacienda nearby and arrive at opening time, before the day trips from Cancún. Ek Balam and Uxmal are quieter Maya cities that also reward an early start.
Where can we celebrate an anniversary in Mexico?+
A villa with a private pool on the Riviera Maya suits an anniversary by the sea, while a restored hacienda near Mérida gives you courtyards, gardens and dinner by candlelight. Your travel expert can add a private swim in a cenote before lunch.
