Ride into Havana's music and old streets

Cuba draws you in through its music. In Havana, son and salsa drift out of courtyards and dance halls, old American cars cruise the Malecón, and the colonial squares of Habana Vieja glow at golden hour. The best meals are often in paladares, private restaurants run out of family homes, and the conversation is as good as the food.

Beyond the capital, the island turns green. In Viñales, limestone hills rise out of the morning mist above the tobacco fields, and farmers show you how a cigar is rolled. Trinidad keeps its cobbled streets and pastel houses much as they were in the sugar era, and Cienfuegos has a French-built centre on the bay. Santa Clara and Camagüey add more history, and Varadero has long white beaches to finish.

Choose Havana, valleys or colonial towns

Each stop shows a different side of the island, linked by road.

  • Havana

Restored plazas in Old Havana, the seafront Malecón at sunset and classic cars, cigars and live music in every quarter.

  • Trinidad and Cienfuegos

Trinidad's pastel streets and cobbled squares near the Valley of the Sugar Mills, and the French-built bay city of Cienfuegos.

  • Santa Clara and Camagüey

Santa Clara and its revolutionary history, then Camagüey, a maze of lanes, churches and giant clay pots in the centre of the island.

Find out how Cuba works

What is the Cuban tourist card, and how do we get one?+
The tourist card is Cuba's entry permit for a holiday, and most visitors need one. You get it through your travel agent, your airline or a Cuban embassy or consulate, and Australian passport holders, for example, need it for tourism. You also fill in an online declaration form before arrival. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Will a trip to Cuba affect our travel to the USA?+
Yes. Anyone who has travelled to Cuba since January 2021 can no longer use an ESTA under the US Visa Waiver Program, even to transit, and needs a full US visa. For that reason we route your flights through Mexico, Canada or Europe.
Which months avoid Cuba's hurricane season?+
The cooler, drier months around the turn of the year are the most comfortable, with warm days and little rain. Storms are most likely late in summer and into autumn, so we watch forecasts closely for travel then.
Where do we stay in Havana?+
Most travellers stay in Habana Vieja or along the Paseo del Prado, close to the old squares and restaurants. Restored colonial hotels and well-run private guesthouses, called casas particulares, both work well, and your travel expert matches them to how you like to travel.
How many days do we need for Havana, Viñales and Trinidad?+
Allow nine to 11 days, giving Havana three or four nights and the rest to Viñales and Trinidad by road. Add Cienfuegos on the way to Trinidad or finish with beach days at Varadero.
How do we travel between towns in Cuba?+
Private drivers and guides are the most reliable way to move between Havana, Viñales and Trinidad, as public transport is limited. Roads are quiet but slow, so we keep each driving day to a few hours with stops along the way.
How can we celebrate a birthday in Havana?+
Start with a sunset drive along the Malecón in a 1950s convertible, then dinner at a paladar with a rooftop view. Finish at a live music bar for salsa and son late into the night.
