Sumidero Canyon and on to San Cristobal

You are met at Tuxtla Gutierrez airport and taken to Sumidero Canyon for a two-hour boat trip beneath cliffs that rise about a kilometre above the Grijalva River. Look out for crocodiles, monkeys and birdlife along the forested banks, then continue into the highlands to your hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas.

    The highland Maya villages

A half-day with your guide in San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan, two towns of the Tzotzil Maya, who keep their own language and dress. See the candlelit church at Chamula, see weaving on the loom in Zinacantan, a craft that goes back before the Spanish arrived, and taste a local drink and handmade tortillas. A walk through the colonial centre of San Cristobal ends the tour, and the afternoon is free.
