Settle into island time on Mauritius

Mauritius gives you a beach that feels a world away, with direct flights from Europe, the Gulf and Perth. The lagoons are calm inside the reef, so mornings start with a swim or a paddle, and afternoons drift by under the casuarina trees. Each coast has its own character, and the east catches the trade winds while the west has the best sunsets.

When you want more than the beach, head inland. Black River Gorges has forest trails and waterfalls, and the Seven Coloured Earths at Chamarel show bands of red and violet sand. Le Morne Brabant, the basalt peak in the southwest, is a World Heritage site and a symbol of freedom. In Port Louis, street stalls cook dholl puri beneath colonial facades, a reminder of the many cultures that shaped the island.

Pick the coast that suits your season

Each coast has its own character, and your travel expert picks the one that suits your dates.

  • Balaclava and Turtle Bay

A sheltered northwest bay inside a marine park, with calm water for snorkelling and long sunsets over the Indian Ocean.

  • Grand Baie

The island's liveliest bay, with boats to the northern islets, waterfront restaurants and sheltered swimming.

  • Cap Malheureux

The northern tip, known for its red-roofed church and views across to the islet of Coin de Mire.

  • Le Morne and the southwest

A day out to Le Morne's peak, the Chamarel coloured earths and the gorges of Black River.

Choose a private stay or a small group

Mauritius suits a private stay at your own pace, and small group tours also include the island.

  • Private tours

A resort on your chosen coast, with a driver for days inland and a skipper for the lagoon.

  • Small group tours

A few travellers explore Chamarel, Port Louis and the gorges with a local guide.

Plan Mauritius around the trade winds

The cooler, drier months suit walking, and summer is warmer with short tropical showers.

  • JanuaryMixed

Hot and humid, with the highest chance of cyclones and heavy showers.

  • FebruaryMixed

Warm sea and humid air, the peak of the cyclone season.

  • MarchMixed

Still warm and humid, with rain easing towards the end of the month.

  • AprilGood

Drier and calmer, the sea still warm for swimming.

  • MayBest

Dry, sunny days and warm water before winter sets in.

  • JuneGood

Cooler winter days, ideal for walking, with breezy east coasts.

  • JulyGood

The coolest month, the sheltered north and west stay pleasant.

  • AugustGood

Dry and mild, good for hiking Le Morne and the gorges.

  • SeptemberBest

Spring warmth returns with dry days and calm lagoons.

  • OctoberBest

Sunny and dry, one of the best months for the beach.

  • NovemberBest

Warm seas and long days before the humid season.

  • DecemberGood

Hot, festive and busy, book early for holiday dates.

Fly into Mauritius

Direct flights arrive from London, Paris, Dubai and Perth, and your travel expert finds the best connection from your home airport.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 16 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 16 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 17 h
  • Perth (non-stop): about 8.5 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 26 h
  • London (non-stop): about 12 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 6.5 h

Add a safari before the beach

South Africa is a short flight away, and Madagascar's lemurs suit travellers who want the wild side of the Indian Ocean.

  • South Africa

Cape Town, the winelands and Big Five safaris near Kruger.

  • Madagascar

Lemurs, baobabs and the canyons of Isalo.

Ask about the weather on each coast

What do we need to enter Mauritius?+
It depends on your passport. Many visitors, including Australian passport holders staying less than 60 days, receive a free visa on arrival. Longer or other visits need a visa arranged before travel. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Which coast of Mauritius should we stay on?+
The west and north are calmer and sunnier in the cooler months, while the east has wide lagoons that are breezy then and lovely in summer. The south is wilder, with cliffs and fewer resorts.
Which months bring the best weather in Mauritius?+
Warm, dry weather runs through the middle and later months of the year, and the cooler months suit walking. The first months of the year are hot and humid, with a chance of cyclones.
How many nights should we spend in Mauritius?+
Seven nights gives you time on the lagoon and two or three days inland. Many travellers add five nights after a safari in South Africa.
How long is the flight to Mauritius?+
It depends on where you start. Non-stop flights take about 12 hours from London, six and a half from Dubai and around nine from Perth. From elsewhere, most travellers connect once through the Gulf, Johannesburg or Europe, and the airport sits about an hour from the north coast.
Can we renew our vows in Mauritius?+
Yes. Beach vow renewals are popular, and resorts arrange the celebrant, flowers and a dinner on the sand. Your travel expert plans the date around the weather on your coast.
What is there to do away from the beach?+
Hike Le Morne or the Black River Gorges, see the Seven Coloured Earths at Chamarel and walk the Pamplemousses botanical garden. A catamaran day to Île aux Cerfs suits a slow day on the water.
Can we see dolphins in Mauritius?+
Morning boat trips from Tamarin Bay on the west coast visit the spinner dolphins that rest in the bay. Your travel expert books a small boat that keeps a respectful distance.
