Follow lemurs through Madagascar's forests

Madagascar feels like stepping into a separate world, because in a sense it is. The island split off more than 150 million years ago, and close to 90 per cent of its plants and animals live nowhere else. In Andasibe the indri, the largest lemur, calls across the canopy at dawn, and in Isalo ring tailed lemurs cross sandstone canyons beside natural pools.

In the far south, the spiny forest around Ifotaka is home to dancing sifakas and old baobabs, and the communities there keep customs of their own. Antananarivo climbs over its hills in the highlands. In the north, Nosy Be and the islands around it have warm water, coral reefs and quiet beaches, the natural place to rest at the end.

Combine Madagascar's rainforest and dry south

Each region holds different lemurs, so most trips combine at least two.

  • Andasibe and Mantadia

Rainforest east of the capital, where the call of the indri lemur carries through the trees each morning.

  • Isalo

Sandstone canyons, palm-lined gorges and natural pools on a plateau in the south, with ring-tailed lemurs nearby.

  • Ifotaka and the spiny forest

The dry far south, with strange spiny forest, dancing sifakas and quiet villages along the Mandrare River.

Visit Madagascar in the dry season

The cooler dry months suit walking, and spring brings lemur babies and flowering forests.

  • JanuaryAvoid

Hot and wet with cyclone risk, some roads become impassable.

  • FebruaryAvoid

Reach Antananarivo through Africa or Mauritius

Most travellers connect through Johannesburg or Mauritius to reach the capital.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 20 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 21 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 22 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 13 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 28 h
  • London (one stop): about 15 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 10 h

Rest on Mauritius after the forests

Mauritius is a short flight east, and South Africa adds a classic safari.

  • Mauritius

Calm lagoons, northern islets and sunsets on the west coast.

  • South Africa

Cape Town, the winelands and Big Five safaris near Kruger.

Prepare for long roads and forest walks

Is Madagascar's visa issued at the airport?+
Yes, for most tourists. A single entry visa for up to 60 days is issued on arrival at the airport, with proof of onward travel. Stays under 15 days have no visa fee, though a 10 euro administration fee applies. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Where is the best place to see lemurs?+
Andasibe for the indri, Ranomafana for golden bamboo lemurs, Isalo and Anja for ring tailed lemurs, and the spiny forest for dancing sifakas. Most itineraries combine two or three.
What time of year works best in Madagascar?+
The dry season through the middle of the year is best for travel, with cool nights in the highlands. Spring brings lemur babies, and the first months of the year are cyclone season.
Is two weeks enough for Madagascar?+
Two weeks lets you see the rainforest, the south and a beach without long drives every day. The island is larger than France, so domestic flights save days.
Where is the Avenue of the Baobabs?+
It lies near Morondava on the west coast, a short flight from Antananarivo. Go at sunset, when the trunks glow red.
What are the roads like in Madagascar?+
Many roads are slow and some are rough, so a drive of 200 kilometres can take most of a day. Your travel expert uses domestic flights where they save time.
Is Nosy Be good for celebrating at the end of the trip?+
Yes. Nosy Be and the islands nearby have calm water, reefs and small lodges, the right setting for a birthday or anniversary dinner on the sand. It is a short flight from Antananarivo.
What can we see on a night walk in Madagascar?+
Guides find mouse lemurs, chameleons and leaf tailed geckos by torchlight around Andasibe and Ranomafana. Walks usually last one to two hours.
