Cortina d'Ampezzo
Day 1 · Cortina d'Ampezzo
Collect your car at Venice Airport and drive north into the mountains. In Cortina, walk from Piazza Roma along streets of Tyrolean houses to the frescoed Basilica of Saints Philip and James, then ride the Faloria cable car for views across the town and peaks. Finish at an osteria with casunziei ravioli, polenta and speck.
Lake Braies
Day 2 · Lake Braies
Spend the day at Lake Braies, the green lake of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. Walk the easy 3.5 km path around the shore, hire a wooden rowing boat, see the small chapel on the southern bank and picnic by the water.
Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Day 3 · Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Drive up to Rifugio Auronzo for the 10 km loop around the three peaks. The path passes Rifugio Lavaredo, the Forcella Lavaredo saddle and Rifugio Locatelli with its views of the north faces and the small Piani lakes, and returns by the Alpini chapel, built for the troops of the First World War.
Bolzano
Day 4 · Bolzano
Drive west to Bolzano, where Italian and Austrian ways meet. Start in Piazza Walther, see the Gothic cathedral, walk the arcades of Via dei Portici and visit the archaeology museum, home of Ötzi the Iceman. End at Piazza delle Erbe market and a South Tyrolean dinner of speck, knödel and strudel.
Merano
Day 5 · Merano
A day in the spa town of Merano: the old centre and its Art Nouveau Kurhaus, the Tappeiner Promenade above the town and St Nicholas Church. The thermal baths are close by if you want a slower afternoon, and the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are a short drive out.
South Tyrol wine road
Day 6 · South Tyrol wine road
Follow the wine road south through around 70 km of vineyards and villages, stopping at wineries to taste Gewürztraminer, Lagrein and Schiava. Visit Appiano Castle on its hill above the vines and the market town of Egna, then return to Bolzano.
Treviso
Day 7 · Treviso
Drive out of the mountains to Treviso, a city of canals and arcades. See Piazza dei Signori and the Palazzo dei Trecento, the cathedral with its works by Titian, the fish market on its island and the Church of San Nicolò. Dinner might be radicchio risotto with a glass of Prosecco.
Day 8 · Treviso
A free day in Treviso before the short drive to Venice Airport to return the car in the afternoon.
