Swim where Aphrodite came ashore

Cyprus feels warm almost all year, and that is the first thing you notice stepping off the plane at Paphos or Larnaca. The water is clear enough to see your feet, and the sea rock of Petra tou Romiou, where legend says Aphrodite came ashore, is a short drive along the coast. Long lunches of meze and grilled halloumi set the pace of the day.

Inland, the Troodos Mountains hold painted Byzantine churches and wine villages cool enough for summer walking. The Roman mosaics in the Paphos archaeological park cover whole villa floors, and Kourion's theatre sits on a cliff above the sea near Limassol. Nicosia, the last divided capital in Europe, is worth a day for its museums and cafés on both sides of the Green Line.

Settle on a coast or the mountains

Most visitors base themselves in one or two towns and take day trips inland.

  • Paphos

Roman mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings and a harbour fort, with Aphrodite's rock along the coast to the east.

  • Limassol and the Troodos

A seafront city with Kourion's clifftop theatre nearby, and painted mountain churches and wine villages inland.

  • Larnaca

A palm-lined promenade, the Church of St Lazarus and the salt lake where flamingos gather in winter.

Catch Cyprus between heat and rain

Spring and autumn bring warm sea days without the full heat of August.

  • JanuaryMixed

Mild on the coast, snow possible in the Troodos Mountains.

  • FebruaryMixed

Cool and showery, almond blossom in the hills.

  • MarchGood

Wildflowers and green hills, comfortable for walking.

  • AprilBest

Warm days, Orthodox Easter and few visitors at the sites.

  • MayBest

Sunny and warm, the sea warming up for swimming.

  • JuneGood

Hot afternoons, long beach days on the coast.

  • JulyMixed

Very hot, best spent by the sea or in the mountains.

  • AugustMixed

The hottest month, busy on the coast.

  • SeptemberBest

Warm seas, softer heat and the grape harvest.

  • OctoberBest

Sunny, mild and quieter, ideal for touring.

  • NovemberGood

Mild days and the first rain, still warm enough to swim early on.

  • DecemberMixed

Cool and wetter, a quiet time for the towns.

Land at Larnaca or Paphos

Larnaca has non-stop flights from London and Dubai, and most other routes connect once in the Gulf or in Athens.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 22 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 22 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 23 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 18 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 17 h
  • London (non-stop): about 4.5 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 4 h

Add the Greek islands next

Athens and the Aegean are a short flight across the water.

  • Greece

Athens, Delphi and Meteora, then Crete and the Cyclades.

Settle your Cyprus questions here

Do I need a visa for Cyprus, and does Schengen apply?+
It depends on your passport. Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders, for example, can visit without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Cyprus is in the EU but not the Schengen area, so days there are counted separately from your Schengen days. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Can you cross into Northern Cyprus from the south?+
Visitors can cross the Green Line on foot at Ledra Street in Nicosia, showing a passport at both checkpoints. Hire cars from the south often need extra insurance for the north, so ask your travel expert before you drive across.
When is the sea warm enough to swim in Cyprus?+
The sea is warm for swimming from June to October, and often still pleasant into November. Spring is better for walking in the Troodos, with wildflowers and cooler days.
Is a week enough for Cyprus?+
A week covers Paphos, the Troodos villages and Limassol at an easy pace. Ten days lets you add Nicosia and the Akamas Peninsula without rushing.
Which part of Cyprus suits a honeymoon?+
The coast near Paphos and the Akamas Peninsula has the quietest coves and villa hotels above the sea. Your travel expert can add a private boat day to the Blue Lagoon or a sunset dinner near Aphrodite's rock.
Which side of the road do you drive on in Cyprus?+
Cyprus drives on the left, as in the UK and Australia, and road signs are in Greek and English. Hire cars in the south carry red number plates, which marks them out to other drivers.
What are the painted churches of the Troodos?+
A group of small Byzantine churches in the Troodos Mountains is UNESCO listed for its wall paintings, some from the 11th and 12th centuries. Many are kept locked, and a keyholder from the village opens them for visitors.
Is halloumi really from Cyprus?+
Yes. Halloumi has been made on the island for centuries and holds protected status in the EU as a Cypriot cheese. Try it grilled in a village taverna as part of a long meze of small plates.
