Varna or Burgas
Day 1 · Varna or Burgas
Collect your car at Varna or Burgas airport and drive the short way to your hotel, where your road map and route notes are waiting. Walk the seafront promenade and sea gardens, or head straight for the beach.
Nessebar, Kazanlak and Plovdiv
Day 2 · Nessebar, Kazanlak and Plovdiv
Drive south to Nessebar and wander its cobbled lanes, wooden houses and medieval churches. Inland, stop at Kazanlak for the Thracian tomb and the Rose Museum before continuing to Plovdiv.
Plovdiv
Day 3 · Plovdiv
Spend the day in the old town, with its Roman theatre and the painted Hindliyan House, the Thursday market and the cafes and studios of the Kapana quarter. For a change of scene, drive into the Rhodope Mountains to Bachkovo Monastery.
Sofia
Day 4 · Sofia
On the way to the capital, stop at the revival-era houses of Karlovo for coffee brewed in hot sand, or at Panagyurishte, whose museum holds a celebrated gold treasure. Arrive in Sofia in time for the evening.
Day 5 · Sofia
Explore the centre on foot, from the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to the St George Rotunda and the cafes of Vitosha Boulevard. The National Historical Museum and the painted Boyana Church are close by, and Vitosha Mountain offers walking trails above the city.
Veliko Tarnovo
Day 6 · Veliko Tarnovo
Cross the Balkan Mountains, stopping at Troyan Monastery if you wish, and reach the medieval capital of Veliko Tarnovo. Climb Tsarevets hill, browse the craft workshops on Samovodska street, and visit the merchant houses of Arbanassi.
Varna or Burgas
Day 7 · Varna or Burgas
Drive east towards the coast, with time for the painted Thracian tomb at Sveshtari and the Madara Rider carved into the cliffs. Spend a last evening by the sea in Varna or Burgas.
Day 8 · Varna or Burgas
Breakfast at the hotel, then drop off the car at the airport for your flight home.
