You are met at Varna or Burgas airport and taken to your hotel, where you meet your guide. The rest of the day is free for the seafront promenade, the sea gardens or the beach.
Nessebar, Kazanlak and Plovdiv
Day 2 · Nessebar, Kazanlak and Plovdiv
Walk the cobbled old town of Nessebar with your guide and see the murals and iconostasis of St Stephen church. Inland at Kazanlak, visit the replica of the painted Thracian tomb and the Rose Museum before driving on to Plovdiv.
Plovdiv and Bansko
Day 3 · Plovdiv and Bansko
A morning in Plovdiv old town takes in the Ethnographic Museum or Hindliyan House and the Roman theatre, followed by lunch at a traditional restaurant. In the afternoon drive over the Yundola pass to Bansko, walk among its stone revival-era houses and find a tavern for dinner.
Rila and Sofia
Day 4 · Rila and Sofia
Visit the small church of Dobarsko, painted in the seventeenth century, then cross the Rila Mountains with lunch along the way. In the afternoon you reach Rila Monastery, hidden in the forest, before arriving in Sofia for the evening.
Sofia
Day 5 · Sofia
A morning walk takes you from the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to the St George Rotunda, the Russian Church and the National Theatre, with lunch at a restaurant that keeps folk traditions. In the afternoon see the early frescoes of Boyana Church; the evening is free.
Veliko Tarnovo
Day 6 · Veliko Tarnovo
Drive into the Balkan Mountains to Etara, an open-air village of craft workshops driven by water. Continue to Veliko Tarnovo for the views of Tsarevets fortress and the workshops of Samovodska street.
Varna or Burgas
Day 7 · Varna or Burgas
See the seventeenth-century murals of the Nativity Church in Arbanassi, then the Madara Rider carved high in the cliffs. Arrive on the coast for a walking tour of the town centre.
Day 8 · Varna or Burgas
Breakfast at the hotel before your transfer to the airport.
