Look up in the Atacama, then go south

Santiago has non-stop flights from Europe, North America and Australia, and Chile rewards the trip with real contrast. In the Atacama Desert, the night sky is so clear that astronomers come here to work, and a guide with a telescope can show you the rings of Saturn. By day there are salt flats, geysers and lagoons where flamingos feed.

Santiago sits with the Andes right behind it, and the Maipo and Colchagua valleys pour fine reds within easy reach. In the Lake District, volcanoes rise above Pucón and Puerto Varas. Patagonia brings the granite towers of Torres del Paine and long walks across the steppe. Far out in the Pacific, Easter Island keeps its carved moai and a quiet all its own.

Discover Chile's stars, wine and skies

Any of these can join your days in Chile, timed to the right night or morning.

  • Stargaze in the Atacama

With almost no light pollution, the Atacama sky is ideal for telescopes. An astronomer guides you through the planets, stars and nearby galaxies.

  • Dinner at a Santiago chef's home

Spend an evening at the home of a local chef, sharing seasonal Chilean dishes and sparkling wine around his table.

  • A balloon flight over the desert

Rise at dawn over canyons, salt pans and geysers as the light turns the rock red and gold.

  • Join the grape harvest

Tour an award-winning estate, then pick grapes in season and learn why Chile's climate suits wine so well.

Choose desert, valley or Patagonia

Chile's regions sit far apart, so most trips choose two and fly between them.

  • Santiago and the wine valleys

A capital ringed by the Andes, with the Casablanca and Maipo valleys close by for vineyard lunches and tastings.

  • Torres del Paine

Patagonia's best-known national park, with granite towers, glacial lakes and guanacos, reached from Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales.

  • Easter Island

A remote Pacific island more than five hours from the mainland, known for the great stone moai of the Rapa Nui people.

Time Patagonia for the southern summer

The south is best between November and March, while Santiago and Easter Island suit most of the year.

  • JanuaryBest

Summer in Torres del Paine, with long days and the busiest trails.

  • FebruaryBest

Warm in Santiago and the south, Tapati festival on Easter Island.

  • MarchGood

Grape harvest in the wine valleys, quieter days in Patagonia.

  • AprilGood

Autumn colour in Patagonia and mild weather in Santiago.

  • MayMixed

Cool in the centre, many Patagonian services begin to close.

  • JuneMixed

Winter in the south, snow on the Andes above Santiago.

  • JulyMixed

Ski season near Santiago, short and cold days in Patagonia.

  • AugustMixed

Late winter, a quiet time for the capital and the vineyards.

  • SeptemberGood

Spring arrives in Santiago, and the national holiday on 18 September.

  • OctoberGood

Torres del Paine reopens fully, wildflowers in the central valley.

  • NovemberBest

Spring in Patagonia, with fewer walkers than the summer months.

  • DecemberBest

Long light in the south and warm days on Easter Island.

Fly non-stop to Santiago

Santiago has non-stop flights from Europe, North America and Australia, which makes Chile an easy way into South America.

  • Sydney (non-stop): about 12.5 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): about 13 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 16 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 22 h
  • Los Angeles (non-stop): about 11 h
  • London (non-stop): about 14.5 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 20 h

Cross into Argentine Patagonia

El Calafate and its glaciers sit just over the border from Torres del Paine.

  • Argentina

Buenos Aires, Mendoza's vineyards and Patagonia's glaciers.

  • Peru

Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and Lake Titicaca.

  • Bolivia

The Salar de Uyuni, La Paz and colonial Sucre.

Check the details for Chile

Do I need a visa for Chile?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, no longer need a visa for stays up to 90 days and receive a tourist card at immigration to keep until they leave. You also complete the online customs and agricultural declaration within 48 hours of arrival. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
When should we visit Torres del Paine?+
The southern summer brings the longest days and the most open trails, though the Patagonian wind is strongest then too. Spring and autumn are quieter, with autumn colour in the beech forests.
How do we get to Easter Island from Chile?+
Flights leave Santiago for Rapa Nui and take about five hours across the Pacific. Allow at least three nights to see the moai at Rano Raraku and Ahu Tongariki with a local guide, and note visitors can stay no more than 30 days.
How many days do we need for the Atacama and Patagonia?+
Two weeks lets you spend three or four nights in each, with a night or two in Santiago between the long domestic flights. With ten days, choose one of the two and add the wine valleys near Santiago.
Which Chilean wine valleys can we visit from Santiago?+
The Maipo Valley is close enough for a long lunch, while Colchagua and Casablanca suit a night or two among the vines. Colchagua is known for Carmenère and Cabernet, and Casablanca for cool-climate whites near the coast.
Is the Atacama Desert hard on the body at altitude?+
San Pedro de Atacama sits at about 2,400 metres, while the El Tatio geysers and the high lagoons reach over 4,000, so we start with lower outings. Drink plenty of water and keep the first evening light.
Can we celebrate a birthday under the Atacama stars?+
Yes. Your travel expert can arrange a private stargazing evening with an astronomer and a telescope, followed by dinner at your lodge. The high desert around San Pedro has some of the clearest skies on earth.
