Feel Brazil's rhythm in Rio, then go wild

Brazil wakes you up. In Rio de Janeiro you can swim at Ipanema before breakfast, ride up to Sugarloaf by late afternoon and hear samba spill out of Lapa after dark. Salvador moves to a different beat, with Afro-Brazilian food, music and capoeira, while the colonial towns of Paraty and Ouro Preto keep the gold and sugar era alive in their churches.

Then there is the wild side of the country. The Pantanal wetlands are among the surest places on earth to see a jaguar, and river lodges near Manaus open up the Amazon by boat. On the border with Argentina, the Iguaçu Falls spread for kilometres through the forest. For a final few days, the dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses and the beaches of Ceará feel a world away.

Join in Brazil's music and wild places

Add any of these to your time in Brazil, and we will fit it around your flights.

  • A drumming workshop in Salvador

Salvador is a home of Bahian percussion. Join a workshop with local drummers and learn the rhythms that drive its street parades.

  • Learn capoeira in Salvador

Capoeira mixes martial art, dance and music. A seasoned teacher shows you the basic kicks, turns and the songs that go with them.

  • Fly over the Iguaçu Falls

A helicopter flight shows the full length of the falls and the river gorge, something you cannot see from the walkways.

  • A seat at Rio Carnival

Watch the samba schools parade from a private space, with the option to join in costume and learn the steps beforehand.

Pick your Brazil, coast or forest

Rio, the falls and the wetlands each deserve a few nights of their own.

  • Rio de Janeiro

Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Christ the Redeemer above the city and the cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain.

  • Iguaçu Falls

Hundreds of waterfalls on the border with Argentina, seen from walkways on both sides and from boats beneath the Devil's Throat.

  • The Pantanal and the Amazon

The wetlands near Campo Grande for jaguars, caimans and giant otters, and the rivers around Manaus deep in the rainforest.

Match Brazil's seasons to your plans

Rio is warmest in the southern summer, while the Pantanal is best in the dry months mid year.

  • JanuaryGood

Hot beach days in Rio, Iguaçu Falls at full flow after the rains.

  • FebruaryGood

Carnival in Rio, usually in February, with heavy rain in the Pantanal.

  • MarchMixed

Humid in Rio, the Pantanal still flooded and hard to explore.

  • AprilGood

Milder in Rio, the Amazon rivers rising high.

  • MayGood

Pleasant in Rio, the flooded forests of the Amazon at their fullest.

  • JuneGood

Dry season starts in the Pantanal, cooler days in Rio.

  • JulyBest

Wildlife gathers at the water in the Pantanal, dry in Rio.

  • AugustBest

Peak jaguar season in the Pantanal and clear days at Iguaçu.

  • SeptemberBest

Dry and warm across the Pantanal, spring arrives in Rio.

  • OctoberGood

The end of the Pantanal dry season, warm beach days in Rio.

  • NovemberGood

Summer begins in Rio, rains return to the Pantanal.

  • DecemberGood

Hot and festive in Rio, New Year's Eve on Copacabana beach.

Land in Rio or São Paulo

Most long-haul routes land in São Paulo or Rio, then domestic flights take over. Your travel expert finds the best connection from your home airport.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 19 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 20 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 21 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 28 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 15 h
  • London (non-stop): about 12 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 14.5 h

Add Argentina's side of Iguaçu

The falls straddle the border, so Buenos Aires and Patagonia sit close at hand.

  • Argentina

Buenos Aires, Mendoza's vineyards and Patagonia's glaciers.

  • Peru

Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and Lake Titicaca.

  • Bolivia

The Salar de Uyuni, La Paz and colonial Sucre.

Ask what Brazil is really like

Do I need a visa for Brazil now?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, need a visa arranged before travel, as none is issued at the airport or border, and travellers who arrive without one are sent back on the next available flight. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
When is the best time for the Pantanal's jaguars?+
The dry months in the middle of the year are best, when the rivers drop and jaguars hunt along the banks near Porto Jofre. Rio's beaches are warmest in the southern summer, so the shoulder months can suit both.
How many days do we need for Rio, Iguaçu and the Pantanal?+
Allow 12 to 14 days, as each sits a domestic flight apart and the Pantanal needs at least three nights for a good chance of a jaguar. With more time, add Salvador or a river lodge near Manaus.
Is Carnival in Rio worth planning a trip around?+
If you love crowds, music and late nights, yes, and grandstand seats at the Sambódromo parade are the best way to see the samba schools. Hotels book out early and rates rise sharply, so your travel expert secures rooms and seats well ahead.
How do we see the Amazon from Brazil?+
Most trips fly into Manaus, where the Rio Negro meets the Solimões, then continue by boat to a river lodge or a small cruise vessel. Days are spent in canoes and on forest trails with naturalist guides.
Is Rio de Janeiro safe for visitors?+
Government advice, such as Australia's, urges a high degree of caution in Brazil because of violent crime, and in Rio that means staying in well-run areas such as Ipanema and Leblon and using private transfers after dark. Your guides and drivers know the city and plan each day around it.
Which Brazilian beach suits a honeymoon best?+
Trancoso in Bahia and the island coast near Paraty are quieter than Rio, with villas and small hotels close to the sand. Many couples spend a few nights in Rio first, then finish somewhere slower.
