Villa Schiarino Lena sits at Sant'Antonio di Porto Mantovano, on the edge of Mantua in the flat Po Valley countryside. It was a Gonzaga residence and has belonged to the Lena family since 1923, and restoration has kept its Renaissance frescoes, coffered ceilings and original floors. The villa is registered as a civil ceremony venue, so you can marry legally without leaving the property.
The villa has no guest rooms, so it is booked for the celebration itself and guests stay in Mantua or the surrounding countryside. Mantua's centre is close by, which makes the city a practical base for a wedding weekend, with the couple's closest guests a short drive from the villa gates.
The day moves through 3 outdoor settings: the Giardino dei Due Ponticelli, the formal Italian garden and the Piazzale della Loggia, each suited to a different part of the day, from ceremony to cocktails to dinner under the stars. Air-conditioned and heated halls take over in cooler months. The kitchen, led by chef Fabio Groppi, builds seasonal Mantuan menus, with the house capon recipe, Cappone alla Stefani, as its signature.
Between events, guests can explore Mantua's historic centre, and the villa runs its own experiences programme. The kitchen's focus on seasonal Mantuan produce also lends itself to a welcome dinner or a tasting the night before, held in the frescoed halls or out in the gardens.
