But, guess what, Fairies? While all those agents work towards protecting your health, they are in fact hurting something else… As it turns out, the consistent and aggressive use of hand sanitiser is having a major impact on your rock!
White Gold
If the band of your ring is crafted from (or with) white gold, excessive exposure to hand sanitiser and cleaning agents can impact on the ring’s finish. It mat not cause immediate damage, but factually, contact with cleaning agents (such as chlorine, bleach, rubbing alcohol, antibacterial soaps and hand sanitisers) can break down the brilliance of metals and gems over time. In other words, your engagement ring may lose its shine.
The Setting
Excessive use of hand sanitiser not only means that you run the risk of dulling the lustre of your ring – it can also destroy the setting, too. Extensive hand sanitiser use can also loosen the prongs that gold diamonds in place. What a disaster that would be, hey Fairies?
What To Do
Health and hygiene should always be your number one priority – so don’t stop using your sanitising products! Instead, avoid rubbing hand sanitiser or harsh cleaning products directly onto your ring. Simply remove your ring prior to the application of products, apply the products, let them dry – and then put your ring back on.
Moreover, we suggest that you clean your engagement ring and wedding band, at least once a week. If you’ve noticed that your engagement ring has lost its sparkle, your polish cloth isn’t bringing it back, you may think that the next best alternative is toothpaste – but wait! Did you know that toothpaste is abrasive and can easily get stuck underneath the claws of your ring? Well, neither did we, Fairies!
