Knowing how to find her ring size without asking is an important consideration when planning a surprise proposal. At Wedded Wonderland, our experience in proposal and engagement planning allows us to guide couples through the finer details, helping make each decision feel more considered and the moment itself more effortless. From discreet ways to figure out her ring size to drawing on the insight of someone close to her, the right guidance can help preserve the surprise while ensuring every detail is thoughtfully arranged.
A ring size belongs to a specific finger on a specific hand, so confirm that the ring will sit on her left ring finger before you measure anything. Fingers on a dominant hand are often slightly larger, and a ring from another finger will mislead you.
Four details change the result. A wide band feels tighter than a slim one, a prominent knuckle can need a larger size to pass over it, and fingers swell with heat, time of day and exercise. Ring sizes also differ between countries, so use the conversion chart below rather than estimating.
Australia, New Zealand and the UK share one lettered ring size system, the US and Canada use numbers, and Europe designates a size by the inner circumference in millimetres, as the ISO ring-size standard does. The chart below converts the sizes most often used for women's rings, so you can read your jeweller's measurement in any system.

Half sizes exist in every system, and jewellers usually stock whole sizes, so a half size may need to be ordered. Match your measurement to the diameter or circumference column rather than rounding by eye, confirm which system an international retailer uses, and use two different measuring methods that agree before you order. The Europe column follows the Spain, Italy and EU sizes in the source chart, and the full chart runs from E to Z+6.
Borrowing a ring she already wears on her left ring finger is the most dependable method, because the jeweller measures a ring that is known to fit. Choose a ring she rarely wears so its absence goes unnoticed, and return it the same day.
A jeweller can measure the ring on a mandrel in minutes. Tell them whether the ring is worn on the dominant hand and how wide the engagement ring band will be, so they can advise on the final size.
If you have only a few minutes, lay the ring flat on paper and trace the inside circle with a sharp pencil. Trace the inner edge only, since the outer edge includes the thickness of the metal, and take the tracing to a jeweller.
Press the ring gently into a firm bar of soap or a piece of modelling putty to leave a clean impression of the inner circle. Wrap the impression in a tissue and bring it to your jeweller.
Slide the ring onto your own finger as far as it goes and mark the spot with a pen. A jeweller can match that mark to a sizing tool. If you use a printable sizer, print it at 100 per cent scale and check it against a ruler first.
A trusted friend, sister or parent can often discover her size without raising suspicion. Choose one person, and ask them to mention it in passing, for instance while shopping together.
If a friend has recently become engaged, ask whether your partner could try on her ring while admiring it. Trying on a ring naturally leads to a conversation about size, and she will only think it is a polite compliment.
A cover story gives your partner a reason to try on rings without suspecting a proposal. Ask her to help choose a birthday gift for a relative, or invite her to a jeweller to look at necklaces.
You can also give her a simple ring for a birthday or anniversary and note how it fits. Choose a style that suits her taste, and ask the jeweller to note the size when you collect it.
When no ring is available, estimate with care and plan for adjustment. Many jewellers can supply a temporary setting or a placeholder ring, so you can propose and choose the final ring together afterwards.
Some guides suggest measuring a sleeping partner with a strip of paper. It is hard to do without waking her, and the result can be inaccurate, so we suggest it only as a last resort. A better choice is to propose with a placeholder ring or a loose stone and size the ring together.
When you are between two sizes, choose the larger one, because a jeweller can usually size a ring down. A band 7mm or wider fits more snugly than a standard band, so ask your jeweller whether to go up by half a size.
Gold, platinum and silver bands can usually be resized by one to two sizes, while titanium, ceramic and full eternity bands cannot, and extensive engraving at the sizing point limits adjustment. Ask your jeweller about the resizing policy, the time allowed and any fee before you buy.
Resizing in Australia typically costs between $50 and $150 AUD depending on the metal and the extent of the adjustment, and some retailers include complimentary resizing for a set period such as 60 days. Fees and policies vary, and changes may apply, so please confirm the details directly. Our guide to buying an engagement ring online covers return and resizing questions to ask.
Insure the ring from the day you collect it, and keep the receipt and valuation together.
Her size is one decision among several, so gather clues to her style while you gather the measurement. Note the metal she wears, the shapes she gravitates towards and how active she is day to day.

Ring sizing sits early in the proposal timeline, ideally six to eight weeks before the day, which leaves room for resizing or a custom order. The remaining decisions are the setting, the date and the photographer.
Our guide to how to propose follows the full order of decisions. When the proposal involves a private setting or a trip, Wedded Concierge can coordinate the setting, timing and privacy as part of a proposal planned with Wedded Wonderland. We specialise in destination proposals, engagements and weddings, and we help couples make the journey happen.
Inner diameter: The width across the inside of the ring in millimetres. Inner circumference is the distance around the inside, and it is how the ISO ring-size standard designates a size.
Half size: The step between two whole ring sizes, used for a closer fit.
Mandrel: The tapered metal tool a jeweller uses to measure ring sizes.
Comfort fit: A band with a rounded inner surface that slides over the knuckle more easily and may suit a size a quarter smaller than a standard fit.
Resizing: The jeweller’s adjustment of a finished ring to a new size.
