Why We Wear Wedding Rings On Our Left Hand

Have you ever thought why we always wear our wedding rings on our left hand?

The wedding ring is worn on the left hand all the way back to the ancient times (really!). The Romans believed that the vein in the ring finger on the left hand ran directly to the heart. And because of this belief the Romans called the “vena amoris” aka the vein of love, naturally to solidify a union based on love, they’d place the ring on that finger to signify the romance and love shared between a newly wedded or engaged couple!

A pretty adorable historical representation of two hearts being connected, don’t you agree?

Rewind back to the 21st Century, our modern day understanding of biology states that all our fingers have veins connected to the heart. But, who cares about science!?

On the other hand (pun intended), modern and contemporary brides are seen wearing their wedding rings on the right hand. In doing so, many central and European countries do wear their wedding ring on the right hand!

Countries include:

  • Norway
  • Austria
  • Denmark
  • Poland
  • Some areas of Belgium
  • Germany
  • Russia
  • Latvia
  • Bulgaria
  • Ukraine

But hey, you do you! No matter what hand you decide to wear your ring, it doesn’t determine how strong you love your partner.

What matters is your relationship and the love you have for each other!
