What Luxury Travellers Are Revealing About The Next Wave of Destination Weddings

What Luxury Travellers Are Revealing About The Next Wave of Destination Weddings

The luxury travel category is being rewritten, and the growing behavior and evolving aspirations of today's most affluent travellers back this up.

Marriott International's Luxury Group surveyed 1,750 of Asia Pacific's most high-earning travellers across Australia, Singapore, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan and Thailand for its 2025 Intentional Traveler report, revealing an emerging luxury travel mindset that coincides with the luxury wedding destination market.

We are seeing the need for deeper cultural engagement, intentionality in itinerary planning, and rising expectations from brands and experiences.

The shift maps onto destination weddings with almost no translation required, and venues, planners and tourism boards slow to read it are positioning for a market that no longer exists.

Asnd as destination weddings continue their rise across the globe, the luxury traveller's appetite is rewriting the brief for every venue, planner and brand chasing their business.

The Need To Be 'Intuitive' and 'Authentic'

Personalisation has stopped being a service tier and has become the baseline.

Industry analysts now describe 2025 as the year personalisation became the price of entry rather than a perk, with guests expecting recognition of their individual tastes the way they would from any premium digital service. The affluent guest no longer wants to be impressed by polish alone. They want to feel anticipated.

AI is entering this equation, and not as a replacement for the human touch luxury travellers are paying for. Data and AI tools are being positioned as the infrastructure behind that anticipation: handling routine requests instantly so staff have more bandwidth for the genuine interactions that actually register with guests.

For destination wedding venues, the read is straightforward: invest in the systems guests never see, not the ones they're asked to admire.

This is because affluent consumers are more and more seeking rare, personalised experiences over rare possessions, with ultra-high-net-worth travellers prioritising exclusivity, access and personalisation as the new markers of status.

A venue without a narrative is a venue without a hook. Couples are choosing properties the way they choose brands, on the strength of a story they want to be part of and a deeper purpose they can get behind.

Well-being... But On Their Own Terms

The modern luxury traveller wants both ends of the spectrum on standby: full disconnection when they want it, fast and responsive service the moment they want back in.

Marriott's 2025 Intentional Traveler report found 90% of high-net-worth travellers now cite wellness experiences as a key factor in their booking decisions, up from 80% the year prior.

Wellbeing has moved from amenity to deciding factor in a single year.

See this as a strategic positioning opportunity. The properties getting this right treat connection and disconnection as a dial guests control, not a binary they're sold on arrival.

Beyond occasional high-end travel, affluent consumers are also investing in holistic wellbeing through longevity-focused retreats and premium self-care, treating it as an extension of identity rather than an indulgence.

For wedding venues, that reframes the wellbeing offering. Less spa menu, more philosophy.

Time is of the Essence

If one shift is reshaping high-end travel right now, it's that time has overtaken money as the ultimate luxury guests are least willing to spend carelessly.

Today's luxury travellers are booking fewer trips with greater depth and deliberation.

Tthe average short stay has increased from three to four nights, with itineraries meticulously planned, often months in advance. Ninety-three percent now expect a personalised travel experience, and 62% plan every detail themselves ahead of time.

This means that control and depth, not spontaneity, are what today's affluent traveller is optimising for.

Fewer trips, longer stays, higher expectation per stay? Guests are being more selective with the greatest resource.

And the parallel for weddings is direct.

The multi-day wedding weekend isn't a trend so much as a response to this same scarcity. We are seeing couples and guests choosing fewer, longer, more immersive stays over a single transactional event.

Venues built to host a full arc of days, not one evening, are the ones positioned to capture it. There's a case here too for leaving room in the schedule: over-programming a weekend can crowd out exactly the spontaneity that makes it memorable.

What This Means For The Industry

Together, these shifts point to a destination wedding market being shaped less by scale and spend, and more by time, story and the freedom to choose between full immersion and fast, human responsiveness.

The venues and planners positioning well for the next 12 months are asking less "how do we add more" and more "how do we design for guests staying longer, more intentionally."

The challenge for the industry is that luxury travellers resist easy categorisation. The same guest seeking total disconnection on arrival may want instant, white-glove responsiveness an hour later, and the venues built to read that in real time, rather than guess at it in advance, will be the ones that earn repeat business and referral.

This can't be a reactive industry. The businesses winning the next decade of destination weddings will be the ones treating these shifts as a mandate.

The goalposts move with the traveller. The businesses that move with them, inch for inch, are the ones that stay ahead. The data isn't a nice-to-have here. It's the map.

This is exactly the kind of cross-industry intelligence Wedded World exists to translate for the wedding sector, where what's reshaping luxury travel gets mapped directly onto what destination wedding venues and planners need to build next.

For the fashion houses and couture ateliers shaping where bridal goes next, we’d love to have you in the room with us for the next edition of Wedded World. You may express your interest to participate through this form.
