Arriving through the gates of Phinda’s private game reserve, we travel over dirt roads and past herds of zebras and antelope before turning into a driveway that leads to a winding path to the main space of the lodge. Built into the rock, the lodge is camouflaged into the dessert settings, but the interior is vast and styled with all the essentials for an African safari, plush cushions, earth tones, oversized leather chairs, a fireplace and a fully-stocked bar.
As part of the stay, couples have the option to join the twice-daily safaris leaving the lodge before sunrise and sunset. These three-hour game drives allow guests the best views of the wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, rhinos, hippos and lions; often parking the car within metres of these incredible species, giving you an up-close encounter that isn’t available anywhere else in the world.
An onsite chef provides all the meals and snacks throughout your stay and makes the most of the fresh South African produce and flavours.
One of the highlights is the surprise outdoor feast, a fine-dining experience at a secret location in the game reserve – true dining beneath the stars. To a backing track of the wild animals and lit only by the gas lamps hung from the trees above, you feast authentic South African cuisine with a modern European twist.
