Plan a wedding in Vanua Levu

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort sits on a 17-acre former coconut plantation with just 25 thatched bures, so the guest list here stays small. At Koro Sun, the two of you can stay in a two-storey treetop bure, with the spa beside a stream a short walk away.

After the vows, everyone gathers in Cousteau's main dining bure, under a soaring thatched roof above the pool and the ocean. Between events, guests can snorkel with the resort's resident marine biologists or join a kava ceremony at Nukubalavu village.

Get your guests to Vanua Levu

Your guests will want to know these before they book flights.

  • Nearest airport: Savusavu Airport (SVU) or Labasa Airport (LBS), with domestic flights from Nadi and Suva
  • Transfer: From Savusavu Airport, guests have a short drive on to the resorts, and Koro Sun includes the transfer.

Give your guests more of Vanua Levu

Days around the wedding fill easily:

  • Savusavu hot springs: See the natural springs in the centre of town, where locals still cook food in the hot water.
  • Rainbow Reef: Dive or snorkel the soft corals of the Somosomo Strait.
  • Pearl farm tour: Visit a black pearl farm and its showroom near Savusavu.
  • Savusavu marina: Stroll the waterfront and the yacht club in the old Copra Shed.

Questions couples ask about marrying in Vanua Levu

How long should we stay on Vanua Levu for a legal wedding?+
At least 5 nights, with the ceremony 2 or more days after you arrive, which is what Koro Sun Resort recommends. That leaves time to apply in person on a weekday for your special licence at the registry office, and there are district offices in Savusavu and a divisional registry in Labasa. You also need 2 witnesses aged 21 or over with photo ID.
Can we marry in the rainforest on Vanua Levu?+
Yes. Koro Sun Resort near Savusavu offers its private rainforest as a ceremony site, alongside the beach, the Seaside Patio, the Main Bure and the Mountain Top Villa. The team will also consider any other spot on the property that you fall for, so walk the grounds before you choose.
Who leads a wedding ceremony at Koro Sun Resort near Savusavu?+
A Methodist minister or a celebrant from the nearby village, and the ceremony can be legally binding. You can keep it private or invite other resort guests to watch. Afterwards, Sand Bar and Grill and Latitude 17 on the Edgewater Lagoon give you waterfront options for dinner, while Palm Grove in the Main Bure handles the bigger meals.
Can we host a private dinner on an island near Savusavu?+
Yes. Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort can book Naviavia, a private island a short boat ride off its peninsula, for 2 hours or a full day, for a sunset or a picnic with your closest people. For dinner closer to your bure, the resort sets private tables on its ocean terraces or at the end of the pier.
Are there luggage limits on flights to Vanua Levu?+
Yes, because the domestic flights between Nadi and Savusavu or Labasa use smaller aircraft, so check the limits before guests pack dresses and suits. The flight takes about 1 hour, and seats can fill quickly for a larger group. Ferries from Suva and Lautoka take about 12 hours, so flying is the practical choice.
Can we have an underwater wedding on Vanua Levu?+
Yes, Koro Sun Resort near Savusavu offers underwater weddings for couples who dive. The resort spans 160 acres of reef and rainforest, and divers in your group can join you underwater or plan their own dive days around the wedding. We confirm the dive arrangements with the resort before you book flights.
