Lofoten's fishing villages and fjords

9 days · 8 nights

Oslo → Svolvaer → Henningsvaer → Stamsund → Trondheim

You begin in Oslo with polar history and an Olympic ski jump, then fly above the Arctic Circle to Svolvaer. Three nights in the fishing village of Henningsvaer bring Trollfjord, sea eagles and days on the water or the mountains. You finish in Trondheim with cheese, art and the Nidaros Cathedral.

Ride the railway down to Aurlandsfjord

The Flåm Railway drops almost 900 metres in about an hour, past waterfalls and snow sheds, to the edge of Aurlandsfjord. Down on the water, a floating sauna and a cold plunge in the fjord are the local way to end the day. Geiranger, further north, is a narrow arm of the sea walled by cliffs and waterfalls, best seen from the deck of a boat.

Bergen, with its painted wooden wharf, is the classic gateway to the western fjords. Far to the north, the Lofoten Islands rise as sharp peaks over white-sand beaches and red fishing cabins, and winter brings the Northern Lights. Oslo has its own pull, with new museums along the waterfront and seafood restaurants by the harbour.

Get out onto the fjords

Norway days your travel expert can plan in, from Bergen and Flåm to the Arctic north.

  • Grieg's villa at Troldhaugen

Visit Troldhaugen, the 1885 villa where Edvard Grieg lived with his wife Nina, now a museum with his writing hut, grave and a concert hall.

  • Goat's cheese in Undredal

Taste brown and white goat's cheese in Undredal, a tiny village of wooden houses on Aurlandsfjord where goats outnumber people.

  • A private floating sauna

Heat up in a private floating sauna on Aurlandsfjord, then step out for a cold plunge in the fjord and back into the warmth.

  • Ride the Flåm Railway

Take the steep Flåmsbana from Myrdal down to Flåm, past waterfalls, river gorges and farms clinging to the hillsides.

  • Boat safari in Senja's fjords

Speed across the clear water near Hamn on Senja, past white beaches and islands, a cormorant colony and, with luck, seals and sea eagles.

  • Drive your own husky team

Learn to mush near Tromsø, then drive your own sled through the snow for up to an hour. Afterwards, meet the dogs and warm up with reindeer stew by the fire.

  • Float in Arctic water

Float in the icy sea in an insulated suit, looking up at the sky, then warm up in a sauna.

  • Zipline down Holmenkollen

Zipline down the 361-metre Holmenkollen ski jump above Oslo, with the city and fjord spread out below.

Pick a fjord base or the far north

Bergen opens the western fjords, while Lofoten is a flight north.

  • Oslo

A harbour capital with the opera house on the water, the Viking ship collections and the Vigeland sculpture park.

  • Geiranger, Flåm and Bergen

The western fjords, from the waterfalls of Geiranger to the Flåm Railway and the wooden wharf of Bergen.

  • The Lofoten Islands

Red fishing cabins under jagged peaks above the Arctic Circle, with the midnight sun in summer and the aurora in winter.

Match the season to the fjords

May and June bring full waterfalls, while winter is the time for the aurora in Lofoten.

  • Perth (one stop): about 21 h

Plan for fjord weather and daylight

Is Norway part of Schengen even though it is outside the EU?+
Yes. Norway is in the Schengen area, so Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted together with other Schengen countries. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Should we go in summer for the fjords or winter for the aurora?+
Summer brings long days, full ferry and rail timetables and the midnight sun in Lofoten. For the aurora, plan for the dark months in the Arctic north, when Lofoten and Tromsø have long nights.
How many days does a fjords and Lofoten trip need?+
Ten to 12 days covers Oslo, the Flåm Railway, the western fjords and Bergen. Lofoten needs another three or four nights, reached by a short flight north.
Is the Flåm Railway worth it?+
Yes. The line runs from Myrdal on the Bergen Railway down to Flåm on the fjord, so it fits naturally between Oslo and Bergen. The train pauses at Kjosfossen waterfall for photographs.
What would a honeymoon in the fjords look like?+
Think a fjord-side hotel in Balestrand or Loen, a private boat on the Nærøyfjord and a floating sauna at Flåm. Tell your travel expert it is a honeymoon, and they plan the details around it.
Can we see the midnight sun in Norway?+
Yes. North of the Arctic Circle the sun stays above the horizon around the clock for several weeks in early summer. In Lofoten it lasts from late May to mid July.
What should we pack for Norway's changeable weather?+
Bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers and comfortable walking shoes, even in summer, as the fjords can be cool and wet. In winter add thermal layers, insulated boots and a hat for aurora nights.
Can we combine Norway with Finland or Sweden?+
Yes. Northern Norway borders Finnish Lapland, and Stockholm and Copenhagen are short flights from Oslo. Your travel expert can join a fjords trip with a few days in another Nordic capital.
