Christmas from Helsinki to Stockholm

8 days · 7 nights

Helsinki → Porvoo → Rovaniemi → Swedish Lapland → Stockholm

You start in Helsinki and medieval Porvoo, then fly north to Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle. Three days of reindeer sleighs, snowmobiles and farm visits lead across the border into Swedish Lapland. You finish in Stockholm with its old town and Christmas market.

Feel the stillness of a Lapland night

Step out of a wood-fired sauna into the snow, or straight into a hole cut in a frozen lake, and you understand Finland quickly. Sauna sits at the centre of life here, and the tradition is on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage. In Lapland the winter nights are long and quiet, and a glass-roofed cabin lets you watch for the Northern Lights without leaving your bed.

Days in the north are spent behind a team of huskies or on a snowmobile through birch and pine, with reindeer farms and frozen rivers along the way. Helsinki makes a fine start or finish, a harbour city of design shops, Nordic restaurants and islands reached by ferry. In summer the light barely fades, and the Lakeland fills with swimmers and berry pickers.

Spend your days in the Finnish Arctic

Lapland outings your travel expert can add to your trip, each with a local guide.

  • Ride Finn horses through Lapland

Ride calm, well-schooled Finn horses through snow-laden pine forest near Levi. It is a gentle, quiet way to see the Arctic woods.

  • Float in an Arctic lake at night

Zip into a dry rescue suit and float on an Arctic lake under the stars. On a clear night, the Northern Lights may appear overhead.

  • Snowmobile out to find the aurora

Take a private snowmobile safari through frozen forest and along iced-over rivers, watching the sky as you go. The night ends with a hot drink by a campfire.

  • Fly above the clouds for the aurora

Board a pressurised aircraft that flies above the weather, on a route planned around the aurora forecast. It gives you a far better chance of a clear view.

Split your days between Helsinki and Lapland

Most trips pair a night or two in the capital with a longer stay above the Arctic Circle.

  • Helsinki

A harbour city of white cathedrals and design shops, with the island fortress of Suomenlinna a short ferry ride away.

  • Rovaniemi and Levi

Lapland's capital on the Arctic Circle and the fells of Levi, with husky sledding, reindeer farms and northern lights.

Choose dark skies or midnight sun

The aurora season runs through the winter months, while June and July bring light through the night.

  • JanuaryBest

Deep snow, husky rides and dark skies for the northern lights.

  • FebruaryBest

Longer days, crisp snow and strong aurora chances.

  • MarchBest

Bright snowy days, still dark enough at night for the aurora.

  • AprilMixed

Snow melting in the south, the aurora season ending.

  • MayMixed

Spring thaw in Lapland, light nights in Helsinki.

  • JuneGood

Midnight sun in Lapland and midsummer celebrations.

  • JulyGood

Warmest month, long light evenings by the lakes.

  • AugustGood

Warm days in Helsinki, berries ripening in the forests.

  • SeptemberGood

Autumn colour in Lapland and the aurora season returns.

  • OctoberMixed

Darker nights, wet and cool before the snow.

  • NovemberMixed

First snow in the north, very short days.

  • DecemberBest

Christmas in Rovaniemi, snow and the northern lights.

Travel north via Helsinki

Helsinki has non-stop flights from across Europe, Asia and the Gulf, then a short flight takes you up to Rovaniemi or Kittilä.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 23 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 23 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 24 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 20 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 14 h
  • London (non-stop): about 3 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 6.5 h

Carry on into Norway's Arctic

Tromsø and the fjords sit just over the border, and many winter trips cross it.

  • Norway

The fjords of Geiranger and Flåm, and the Lofoten Islands.

Prepare for the Finnish cold

Is a visa needed for a winter trip to Lapland?+
It depends on your passport. Finland is in the Schengen area, so Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders, for example, can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa, and your fingerprints and photo are taken under the EU Entry/Exit System when you first arrive. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
When are you most likely to see the Northern Lights in Lapland?+
The aurora season in Finnish Lapland runs from late August to early April, and clear, dark nights between December and March give the best chances. Your guides watch the forecast and the cloud cover each evening.
How many nights in Lapland are enough?+
Four or five nights in Lapland gives several chances at a clear sky, with time for husky, reindeer and snowmobile days. Add a night or two in Helsinki at the start or end.
How cold does it get in Finnish Lapland?+
Winter days often sit between minus 10 and minus 25 degrees, with colder snaps in January. Thermal suits, boots and mittens are usually provided for outings, so pack warm layers to wear underneath.
Can we spend our honeymoon in a glass igloo?+
Yes. Glass igloos and glass-roofed cabins near Saariselkä, Levi and Rovaniemi let you watch the sky from bed. Tell your travel expert it is a honeymoon, and they can add a private sauna evening or a reindeer sleigh ride for two.
What is the etiquette in a Finnish sauna?+
Finns shower first, sit on a small towel and take turns throwing water on the stones to raise the steam. Mixed saunas usually mean swimwear, and a roll in the snow or a lake dip between rounds is optional.
Is Rovaniemi worth visiting without children?+
Yes. Beyond Santa Claus Village, Rovaniemi has the Arktikum museum on Arctic life and quick access to husky and reindeer farms. Couples often use it as a first night before moving to a quieter base further north.
Can we visit Finland in summer instead?+
Yes. Midsummer brings near-constant daylight in Lapland and long, warm days in the Lakeland, with lake swims and cottage saunas. Your travel expert can plan a summer trip around Helsinki and the lakes.
