Sip crémant on the Moselle

A glass of local crémant on deck, with vineyards climbing the slopes on both banks, is how most visitors first meet Luxembourg's Moselle. The river forms the border with Germany here, and wine villages such as Remich and Schengen sit right on the water. Cellars along the valley make Riesling, Pinot Gris and sparkling wine, and many open for tastings.

Luxembourg City is worth a night before you sail. The capital stands on cliffs above the Alzette and Pétrusse valleys, and its old quarters and fortifications are UNESCO listed. Walk the Bock casemates, tunnels cut into the rock for the garrison, then take the lift down to the Grund for lunch by the river.

Spend time ashore in Luxembourg

The capital and the wine village of Remich are the two places most guests see.

  • Luxembourg City

A fortified old town on cliffs above the Alzette, with the Bock casemates and the Grund quarter by the river.

  • Remich and the Moselle

A riverside promenade and wine cellars at the heart of Luxembourg's Moselle vineyards, where the barge sets off.

Get to Luxembourg through Frankfurt

Many travellers fly into Frankfurt or Paris and finish the journey by road or rail.

  • Melbourne (one stop): about 26 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 27 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 21 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 13 h
  • London (non-stop): about 1.5 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 9 h

Extend the trip into German wine country

Trier and Cochem lie downriver, and Paris is a little over two hours by train.

  • Germany

Munich, the Bavarian Alps and the Danube from Passau.

  • France

Slow canal journeys through Burgundy, the Midi and Provence.

Settle the practical side of a Moselle trip

Do we need a visa to cruise the Moselle from Luxembourg into Germany?+
It depends on your passport, but crossing the border needs no extra visa. Luxembourg and Germany are both in the Schengen area, so one allowance covers the whole cruise. Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders, for example, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
When does the Moselle barge season run?+
Most barges sail between April and October. Harvest weeks bring wine festivals to river villages such as Grevenmacher, and midsummer is best for long evenings on deck.
How many nights should we add in Luxembourg City?+
One or two nights is enough to walk the old town, the Bock casemates and the Grund before you board. Add a third for a day in the Mullerthal, the rocky forest region known as Little Switzerland.
Can a barge cruise mark a milestone birthday?+
Yes. Barges carry only a few guests, so a private crémant tasting or a birthday dinner on deck is simple to arrange. Tell your travel expert when you book, and the crew know before you board.
What is crémant de Luxembourg?+
It is Luxembourg's sparkling wine, made by the traditional method from grapes grown on the Moselle slopes. Cellars in Remich and Wormeldange open for tastings.
Is the village of Schengen worth a stop?+
Yes, briefly. The 1985 agreement that opened Europe's internal borders was signed on a boat on the Moselle at Schengen, and a small museum by the river tells the story.
Which airport serves Luxembourg?+
Luxembourg has its own airport with flights from around Europe, but many long-haul travellers fly into Frankfurt or Paris and continue by train or road. Your travel expert picks the connection that suits your home airport and arranges the transfer to your hotel in the capital.
Is public transport free in Luxembourg?+
Yes. Buses, trams and second-class trains across Luxembourg have been free since 2020, which makes a day in the capital easy before the cruise.
