Wander Cartagena, then climb into coffee country

Colombia is warmer and more welcoming than most people expect. In Cartagena, the walled old town is full of flowers, painted doors and rooftop bars, and a short boat ride takes you to the islands of Rosario and Barú. Up in the Andes, Bogotá has one of the best restaurant scenes on the continent, and Medellín has turned its hillside neighbourhoods into open-air galleries.

Between the cities sits the coffee region, where you stay on working fincas and walk among wax palms in the Cocora Valley. Near Medellín, the lake and rock of Guatapé make an easy day out. On the Caribbean coast, Tayrona National Park mixes forest trails with empty beaches, and in the south, the carved stone figures of San Agustín recall a culture that vanished centuries ago.

Taste and see Colombia up close

Add any of these to your Colombia days, and we will fit them around your flights.

  • A concert in the Salt Cathedral

Explore the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral, carved from rock salt about 180 metres underground, then hear a private concert inside it.

  • A balloon over the coffee farms

Float above the green coffee plantations at sunrise, when the low light picks out every farmhouse and ridge.

  • Meet the flower growers of Santa Elena

Visit a farm in Santa Elena, above Medellín, and learn how the silleteros build the flower displays carried in the city's famous parade.

  • Rum, coffee and chocolate in Cartagena

Walk the cobbled streets with a guide, tasting local coffee, cacao and aged rum as you go.

  • Fly over the Lost City

A private helicopter flight over the Sierra Nevada brings you above Ciudad Perdida, the ancient terraced city of Teyuna.

Choose Colombia's coast or its mountains

Most trips spend time in both, with a short flight between.

  • Bogotá

The high capital of the Andes, with the colonial lanes of La Candelaria, the Gold Museum and views from Monserrate above the city.

  • Cartagena

A walled colonial port on the Caribbean, with balconies of bougainvillea, quiet plazas and boat trips to the Rosario Islands offshore.

  • The coffee region

Green hills around Pereira, where coffee farms open their plantations and the tall wax palms of the Cocora Valley rise from the slopes.

  • Medellín and Guatapé

A spring-like city in a mountain valley, then the countryside beyond Marinilla, with the lakes and colourful town of Guatapé.

Tour Colombia privately or in a group

Choose a private tour or a small group tour, or see Colombia as a stop on a private jet journey.

  • Private tours

Your own guide in Cartagena's walled city and a driver for the coffee country's mountain roads.

  • Small group tours

Travel Bogotá, the coffee farms and the Caribbean coast with a few others and one guide.

Plan around Colombia's dry spells

Colombia sits near the equator, so altitude sets the temperature and the year splits into dry and wet.

Clear up your Colombia questions

How long can I stay in Colombia as a tourist?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, generally don't need a visa for stays of 90 days or less, though you may be asked for an onward ticket or proof of funds. Visitors can't stay more than 180 days in a calendar year. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Is Colombia safe to visit now?+
Yes, with care. Government travel advice for Colombia urges caution overall, with stronger warnings for several regions our trips don't visit. Cartagena, Bogotá, Medellín and the coffee region are well travelled, and your private guides and drivers plan each day with local knowledge. Read your own government's latest advice before you book.
When is the dry season on Colombia's Caribbean coast?+
Cartagena and Tayrona are driest between December and March, when the trade winds ease the heat. Inland, Bogotá and the coffee region have two drier spells a year, so altitude matters more than the month.
How many days do we need for Cartagena, Medellín and the coffee region?+
Ten to 12 days gives each three nights at an easy pace, linked by short domestic flights. Add Bogotá or a few island days off Barú if you have two weeks.
Can we stay on a working coffee farm in Colombia?+
Yes. Fincas around Salento, Manizales and Pereira host guests in restored farmhouses, with walks through the plantations and tastings of the harvest. A morning among the wax palms of the Cocora Valley fits easily alongside.
Will Bogotá's altitude affect us?+
Bogotá sits at about 2,600 metres, so some travellers feel breathless or tired on the first day. We keep arrival days light and often begin on the coast before flying up.
Is Cartagena a good place to celebrate an anniversary?+
Cartagena suits a celebration well, with boutique hotels in restored colonial mansions and rooftop dinners inside the old walls. Your travel expert can add a private boat to the Rosario Islands for a day on the water.
