Hear morna drift through Mindelo's streets

Cape Verde is for travellers who have done the obvious islands and want somewhere with its own sound. In Mindelo on São Vicente, bars fill with morna, the soulful music Cesária Évora carried to the world, and pastel colonial streets lead down to the harbour. The islands sit in the Atlantic about 600 kilometres off Senegal, warm and dry for most of the year.

A short ferry crosses to Santo Antão, the greenest island, where paths cling to cliffs above valleys of sugar cane and banana. Fogo rises to an active volcano you can climb, and Sal and Boa Vista have long white beaches and steady trade winds for kitesurfing. Portuguese and West African roots run through the food and the music.

Divide your days between music and mountains

Mindelo gives you the evenings, and Santo Antão gives you the trails.

  • Mindelo and São Vicente

Find answers on travel to Cape Verde

How do we check Cabo Verde's entry rules?+
Contact the nearest Cabo Verde embassy or consulate, as the entry rules depend on your passport. Whatever your nationality, carry a passport valid for at least six months. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Which Cape Verde islands are best for walking?+
Santo Antão has the best trails, with paths along cliffs and down into green valleys of sugar cane. Fogo adds a climb up its volcano.
How do you travel between the islands?+
A ferry links São Vicente and Santo Antão in about an hour, and domestic flights connect the other islands. Atlantic swell can delay ferries, so your travel expert leaves a spare day.
When are the Cape Verde islands driest?+
Most of the year is dry, sunny and good for walking. Brief rains late in the northern summer turn Santo Antão green.
How long should we spend in Cape Verde?+
Eight to ten days covers São Vicente and Santo Antão at walking pace. Add a few days on Sal or Boa Vista for the beaches.
What music should we hear in Mindelo?+
Morna is the slow, soulful song style Cesária Évora made famous, and coladeira is its livelier cousin. Mindelo's bars host live music most nights.
Does Cape Verde suit an anniversary trip?+
Yes, for couples who like walking and music more than resorts. A dinner with live morna in Mindelo is an easy way to mark the night.
How do we get to Cape Verde?+
Most travellers fly through Lisbon, with onward flights to Sal or São Vicente. It pairs naturally with time in Portugal.
