You are met at Sofia airport and driven to your hotel. Spend the afternoon on foot in the centre: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with its gilded dome, the Rotunda of St George, the Russian Church and the National Theatre, then a coffee on Vitosha Boulevard.
Rila Monastery and Boyana
Day 2 · Rila Monastery and Boyana
Join a guided day trip into the mountains to Rila Monastery, with its arcaded balconies, painted walls and gilded iconostasis, and about an hour to explore on your own. Try mekitsi, the local fried dough, with buffalo yoghurt. On the way back, stop at Boyana Church, whose medieval frescoes of more than 240 figures are seen as forerunners of the Renaissance.

Day 3 · Sofia
A free day for the city's museums, from the National History Museum to the art and ethnographic collections in the former Royal Palace. If you would rather see more of the country, a shared day trip to Plovdiv can be added.
