There are proposals, and then there are proposals that make you wonder if someone had the entire African sunrise on the mood board. Mari Gonzalez and Pipo Marques have officially entered the engaged era after the singer proposed during their trip to Kenya, right as the sun came up over the Maasai Mara.
The moment happened on September 26, 2026, during the couple’s safari trip through Kenya. Mari later shared the news with her followers, calling it “the most special sunrise of our lives.”
And if this has you thinking about your own proposal plans, the setting is only one piece of the puzzle. Finding the right destination, photographer, planner or experience can completely change the feel of the moment, which is exactly where Wedded Concierge can be useful when you want the planning to feel personal rather than painfully logistical.
Mari and Pipo had already been spending several days exploring Kenya before the proposal.
The couple travelled to the Maasai Mara for a luxury safari experience, staying at Mahali Mzuri, an exclusive safari camp in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy. The property has just 12 tented suites, with the accommodation designed to sit within the surrounding landscape. Guests can head out on safari twice a day, while the camp also offers a pool, spa and communal spaces.
So, naturally, this was not exactly your average hotel balcony proposal.
The setting was wide open savanna, with the sky stretching endlessly behind them and the early morning light turning everything golden. In the images, Mari and Pipo are dressed for the safari rather than a formal proposal, which somehow makes the whole thing even better.

The proposal unfolded as the sun was coming up over the savanna.
One of the most cinematic images captures Pipo down on one knee while Mari stands in front of him, completely silhouetted by the golden sky. The sun sits low on the horizon behind them, creating that warm, almost unreal glow that no amount of wedding lighting could quite replicate.
In another moment, the newly engaged couple are laughing together, with Pipo's arm around Mari and her new ring clearly on display.
The timing was almost suspiciously perfect.
Mari's own caption summed it up: “O nascer do sol mais especial das nossas vidas! [The most special sunrise of our lives!]” She went on to reflect on how their story began years ago, before the pair eventually found their way back to each other.

Of course, we need to talk about the ring.

Mari's new engagement ring features a prominent round centre stone set on a slender band, giving it that classic solitaire silhouette while still looking seriously sparkly in the warm Kenyan light.
The close-up images make the ring particularly hard to miss. Mari holds her hand up beside her face, showing off the stone while laughing, and the following portraits place it right in the centre of the frame as Pipo proudly admires it.
It is the kind of ring that does not need much styling around it.
The rest of Mari's jewellery is relatively understated, with her engagement ring doing exactly what an engagement ring should do: stealing the spotlight.

There is something particularly fun about the fact that Mari was not dressed for the proposal at all.
Her white blouse has a distinctly romantic feel, with embroidered cutwork, scalloped edges, button details and voluminous sleeves. The relaxed silhouette is contrasted with olive-green utility-style trousers and a wide cognac leather belt wrapped around her waist. Then there is the ribbon.
Her dark hair is pulled into a low ponytail, finished with an oversized checked ribbon that gives the otherwise safari-ready look a slightly fashion-editorial twist.
She also wears stacked bracelets and rings, small earrings and a pendant necklace, while her nails are long and almond-shaped with a pale finish.
The result is very much luxury safari meets cool holiday wardrobe, which feels perfectly appropriate considering where she was standing.
The proposal also comes with a little plot twist because Mari and Pipo's story did not begin with their public relationship in 2024.
The pair already knew each other from their time in Salvador and had been romantically involved years earlier, before losing touch. Mari later revealed in a 2026 interview that the earlier connection happened before she moved to São Paulo and pursued her career there. Their paths eventually crossed again through social media, leading to the relationship they have today.
They publicly confirmed their relationship in June 2024 and celebrated their second anniversary in June 2026. Earlier this year, the couple spoke about their future together, including their shared dreams of building a family, while saying they were taking things at their own pace.
Which makes Mari's caption about their story “starting back there” particularly fitting.
This is not exactly a brand-new love story. It is a reunion that got a very spectacular sequel.
Before the proposal, Mari had been documenting the Kenya trip, including safari drives through the Maasai Mara and encounters with the local wildlife.
Pipo had an especially personal connection to the destination. He shared that he had visited Kenya more than 20 years earlier as a child and was returning with a completely different perspective.
That makes the destination feel like more than a random luxury getaway.
The couple were already immersed in the landscape, spending their days exploring the savanna and their downtime at Mahali Mzuri. Then, somewhere between the safari drives and early mornings, Pipo managed to turn the trip into the beginning of their next chapter.
Perhaps the best part is how little the proposal needed.
There was no elaborate floral installation, no restaurant takeover and no giant sign spelling out the obvious. Just two people, an open landscape, a ring and a sunrise that happened to arrive at exactly the right time.
The images capture the kind of excitement that is difficult to stage. Mari is laughing, covering her face, looking at the ring and leaning into Pipo as they take in what just happened.
It feels spontaneous even though the timing was clearly planned.
And really, that is the sweet spot for a proposal.
