There are few things that can divide the internet quite like a wedding guest dress.
Wear white and the verdict is usually swift. Show up looking more bridal than the bride and expect a few strongly worded comments. But Kylie Jenner’s look at Jordyn Woods and Karl-Anthony Towns’ Malibu wedding posed a slightly more complicated question: can a dress be too sexy for a wedding if it perfectly follows the theme?
Kylie arrived at the star-studded celebration alongside boyfriend Timothée Chalamet in what appeared to be an all-black dress code, wearing a vintage-inspired Roberto Cavalli halter gown that was certainly not designed for anyone hoping to blend into the background.
With dramatic cutouts, crystal belt details, a backless silhouette and a sky-high centre slit, the dress quickly became one of the most talked-about looks of the evening. Some thought she had gone too far for a friend's wedding. Others argued that she looked incredible and, importantly, wore exactly what the dress code appeared to ask for.
So, inappropriate wedding guest behaviour or simply Kylie being Kylie?
Kylie’s black Roberto Cavalli gown was a version of a design originally presented in the brand’s Spring 2004 ready-to-wear collection, although the runway version appeared in white.
The archival-inspired look featured a halter neckline and dramatic sweeping cutouts that exposed the sides of her torso, creating an almost swimsuit-like silhouette beneath the crystal-embellished bands across the waist and underbust. The skirt then dropped into a floor-length column shape, complete with an extremely high slit.
In other words, this was not your standard black wedding guest dress.
She kept the rest of the styling relatively restrained, opting for clear platform heels and minimal jewellery, though her statement Rahaminov Diamonds ring, featuring a reported 14.06-carat centre stone, was hardly invisible.
The overall effect was unmistakably glamorous, sexy and very much in keeping with the kind of archival fashion revival that has become a staple of Kylie’s wardrobe.
Here is where the debate gets interesting.
Based on photographs and videos from the celebration, many of the celebrity guests appeared to follow an all-black dress code. Hailey Bieber wore a dramatic black dress with a heavily embellished bust, while Justin Bieber attended in a black suit. Michael B. Jordan, Jada Pinkett Smith, Teyana Taylor and other guests also appeared in black.
And Kylie? She wore black.
From a dress-code perspective, there is no obvious violation here. She did not arrive in white. She did not ignore the requested colour palette. In fact, her outfit was monochromatic and clearly coordinated with the mood of the guest attire.
If anything, Kylie followed the assignment. She just added her own interpretation in several strategically placed cutouts.
This is where wedding etiquette becomes less straightforward.
Traditionally, guests are encouraged to avoid wearing anything that could distract from the couple. But “distracting” is subjective, especially at a celebrity wedding where high fashion is practically part of the guest list.
Kylie Jenner attending in a conservative midi dress would arguably have been more surprising than the Roberto Cavalli gown she actually wore.
The context also matters. This was not a small daytime church wedding with a pastel dress code and a reception ending at 8 p.m. It was a high-profile Malibu celebration attended by celebrities, athletes and fashion figures, with an apparent all-black theme and plenty of dramatic eveningwear.
A sexy black gown in that setting is not exactly an unexpected plot twist.
The strongest argument in favour of Kylie’s dress is perhaps Jordyn herself.
The bride wore a custom Danielle Frankel gown for her wedding day, embracing an entirely different but equally dramatic kind of fashion statement. Her bridal wardrobe was carefully curated throughout the wedding celebrations, while the guest dress code created a visual contrast between the bride in white and her guests in black.
From the ceremony images, Jordyn remains unmistakably the centre of the visual story.
Kylie may have shown a considerable amount of skin, but she was not competing with Jordyn’s bridal silhouette or wearing a colour that blurred the line between bride and guest.
And considering the complicated but ultimately rekindled friendship between Kylie and Jordyn, her presence at the wedding itself carried its own significance.
The internet loves a wedding guest etiquette debate because the rules are usually simple enough to argue about and vague enough for nobody to agree.
Yes, Kylie’s dress was revealing. Yes, it was designed to be noticed. And yes, plenty of brides might reasonably prefer their guests to leave the high-octane cutouts at home.
But at Jordyn Woods and Karl-Anthony Towns’ wedding, context is everything.
The dress was black. It fit the apparent theme. It matched the glamorous energy of the guest list. And, perhaps most importantly, there is no indication that the bride had an issue with it.
For a conventional wedding, perhaps some would say yes. For this wedding? It looked less like a dress-code disaster and more like a particularly daring interpretation of the theme.
Maybe that is the real lesson here: wedding guest etiquette is not always about following the rules on paper. Sometimes, it is about reading the room.
And judging by the black-clad celebrity crowd, Kylie may have read it just fine.
