Love is truly in the air this February–especially for recently engaged couples! Another pair of lovebirds who will soon tie the knot are Winnie Harlow and Kyle Kuzma. The power couple got engaged in a jet plane while on a trip to Turks and Caicos. They have been together since 2020. Kuzma and Harlow’s story, like many couples in this day and age, started online. It was in 2019 when Kuzma first messaged the model on Instagram, but a glitch left his message unread or unsent. “I don’t know what the glitch in the system with Instagram is, but that never came up for me,” she explains on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. A year later, Kuzma tried reaching out again, and she responded. Despite getting to know each other during the pandemic, things worked out. The pair officially became a couple in April 2020 and have been together ever since, supporting each other’s careers and encouraging each other to push outside their comfort zones. Case in point, Kuzma says that Harlow has elevated his fashion sense. “Winnie is very detailed with every single thing, [from] what the accessories look like [to] what attitude to rock with it. She’s really leveled up my energy,” he tells People.
Kuzma’s proposal to Harlow was a carefully planned and curated event that was nothing short of spectacular. He popped the question on board a private jet filled with roses, balloons, chocolates, and champagne. Harlow tells Vogue about what went on in her mind: “I still had no idea what this was. I was just like, ‘This is so cute for Valentine’s Day, oh my gosh!’”
The elaborate affair was followed by more magical moments in the breathtaking islands of Turks and Caicos. Family and friends surprised Harlow with their presence, making the occasion more memorable. To celebrate the big day, Kuzma hosted an intimate candlelit dinner by the beach with good food and wine. In her Instagram post, Winnie is seen flashing her engagement ring as fireworks pop in the midnight sky behind her. “To eternity #shesaidyes,” she writes in the caption.
From the private jet plane to a luxurious getaway, Kuzma’s proposal was heartfelt and extravagant. But the detail that truly stole the show was the engagement ring, which took three months for him to design. The dazzling piece of jewelry features a trinity setting with an oval-shaped diamond flanked by two smaller horizontally placed diamonds. At a whopping 8.5 carats, this piece is hefty and one-of-a-kind. Having been designed by Kuzma, the custom ring reinforces the trend of personalization and more hands-on ring planning, which makes engagements more meaningful in these modern times.
While full-production proposals have not been on the radar recently, Kuzma makes a convincing case for its comeback. Other celebrities have chosen to reveal only their rings, disclosing any details about the proposal itself: Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, and Zendaya, to name a few. But Kuzma’s lavish display proves that nothing stirs excitement as much as grand gestures.
In fact, one trend that couples and wedding vendors need to look out for is destination proposals. Think luxurious tropical escapes or intimate dinner setups. For example, Hailee Steinfeld said yes to her boyfriend NFL quarterback Josh Allen overlooking a cliff during sunset.
