A minimoon is a short trip, usually two to four nights, taken straight after the wedding and often followed by a longer honeymoon later. Dictionary.com first records the word in this sense between 2010 and 2015. It gives you rest while the wedding is still fresh and lets the big trip wait for better leave or a better season. A trip taken during pregnancy is a babymoon, which is a different trip with different planning.

It works anywhere if you stay close to the venue, keep it to two to four nights, book one property and set both budgets on the same day.
Dictionary.com lists two meanings. The older one, first recorded between 1995 and 2000, is a term in astronomy for a full moon said to look smaller than normal when the moon sits at its farthest point from Earth. The wedding sense is "a short, usually inexpensive honeymoon, often followed by a longer honeymoon later on".

Take the length from that definition and leave the price. How short and how close the trip is makes it a minimoon, and the nightly spend is yours to choose. Three nights in a villa with its own pool counts, and so do two nights at a country house an hour from the reception.
Both spellings mean the same trip, as does "mini moon" with a space. Dictionary.com lists it as one word, so write minimoon on an itinerary or an out-of-office.
The clearest numbers come from the UK, and there is no comparable published survey for Australia, the UAE or the US. Aviva's June 2025 research, a survey of 2,001 people in the UK, found 6 per cent planning both an overseas minimoon and an overseas honeymoon. Those yet to travel expected to spend 16 per cent more on a minimoon abroad than those who had already taken one. The expected minimoon spend came to about three quarters of the honeymoon figure, and the pound amounts are in the UK section below.

A minimoon makes sense when one of these applies to you:
Your leave won't stretch, so two or three days after the wedding fit around work while the long trip waits for a quieter month.
The honeymoon you want is wet or crowded on your wedding date, so a short trip now and the big one later suits both.
After a long wedding weekend or a large guest list, a few quiet nights before the family visits begin are worth more than a long-haul flight.
The two trips differ in five ways:
Length: Two to four nights, where a honeymoon runs a week or more.
Distance: A drive or a short flight from the venue, while a honeymoon can go long haul.
Purpose: Rest after the wedding, against the trip you have planned for months.
Timing: It starts as soon as the wedding is over, and the honeymoon often follows weeks or months later.
Planning: One property and almost no itinerary, where a honeymoon often has flights, transfers and more than one stop.

The line sits at about five nights, or at any trip that brings jet lag. Past that you are planning a second honeymoon, and it will compete with the first for money and leave. If the long trip is still open, compare 50 honeymoon destinations for every type of newlywed.
Take them in this order, since the early decisions shape every booking after them:
Skip the minimoon if the honeymoon starts within a week or two, if your leave can't stretch to both, or if nothing good sits within a short drive of the venue. Three days at home in your own bed is a sound plan too. If you do go, decide before the wedding spend is final, so the trip is planned rather than squeezed in.

Write the minimoon and honeymoon budgets down together. Decide in advance what goes on the room, spa time, dinners and upgrades. A short stay grows through its extras, so book one dinner and one spa time and leave the rest open. For the long trip, start with how to plan your honeymoon.

Start the clock at the venue. For two or three nights, a sensible working limit is about two hours door to door, because every hour in a car or a terminal comes out of a short stay. A short flight earns its place at four nights, when you have a full day to spare. Check the last transfer of the day too, since some seaplanes and boats run in daylight only.

Two nights is enough to sleep and eat well. Three give you one full day with nothing booked, and four suit a longer drive or a short flight. Storm seasons, school holidays and public holidays fill hotels early, so check the whole week after the wedding as well as the day itself.

Book one property and one room, with no change of hotel halfway through. Choose somewhere you would happily spend a whole day indoors if rain or heat keeps you there, such as one with a spa, a restaurant worth staying in for, good in-room dining and a room with space to sit. Ask the spa whether it has private or single-sex hours. If children are coming, check the age policy first, since some retreats take adults only.

If either of you is pregnant or has a health condition, speak to your doctor or midwife before you book, and ask about spa treatments, hot pools and saunas. Airlines set their own pregnancy rules, and as the NHS notes, after 28 weeks one may ask for a letter confirming your due date, so read your carrier's page before booking a flight. Ask the property how far the nearest hospital is, which matters most at a desert resort, a remote lodge or an island.
If the morning after holds a brunch or time with family, plan to leave late morning or early afternoon. Where the celebrations run over several days, start the minimoon after the last event. Book a car and driver from the venue, because neither of you should drive after the wedding night, and ask the wedding-night hotel for a late checkout. Agree who takes the dress, the suit and the gifts home, so only your minimoon bags travel with you.

The name on every ticket and booking must match the passport you will travel on. If you're changing your name, book in the name on the passport you will actually carry that week, and check the passport office's rules where you live. Hold a flexible or refundable rate until the wedding date is final, since a fixed rate is lost if the date or a work deadline moves. Buy travel insurance when you book, and read the policy wording on a changed wedding date, a storm that closes the road and, if you are pregnant, the week its pregnancy cover ends.

Before you arrive, send the hotel a short private note saying it is your wedding, the late checkout you would like, when you want in-room dining and anything you would rather it skipped. That way the hotel hears it from you before it sees the photos. Then fix the honeymoon dates and leave, so the two trips don't share a season or a style. To match the long trip to the calendar, use the best honeymoon destinations by wedding month.

This plan assumes a Saturday wedding and a wedding night at or near the venue, then three nights away from Sunday to Tuesday. Shift it to your own dates:
Sunday: Brunch with family until about 10.30, then the driver at 11. Arrive mid-afternoon and book nothing for the evening but in-room dining.
Monday: A late breakfast, a spa time for two and a long lunch, with dinner wherever you feel like it.
Tuesday: A walk or a swim in the morning, and the one dinner you booked in advance.
Wednesday: A late checkout, then home with a day spare before work.

The eight steps work anywhere, but the drives, the holiday dates and the stays worth booking depend on where you marry. Where a hotel publishes no fixed rate, its booking page prices your dates.
For wider ideas on marrying here, see the Australia wedding magazine.

After a Hunter Valley wedding, head for the coast. Visit Newcastle puts the Hunter 45 minutes west of Newcastle and Port Stephens 40 minutes north, so allow about 90 minutes to the bay. The Anchorage Port Stephens has Spa Lucca and an adults-only infinity pool, and Bannisters Port Stephens has an ocean-view infinity pool and Rick Stein at Port Stephens.
After a Sydney wedding, Jonah's at Whale Beach has 11 rooms, with bed and breakfast from AUD 913 twin share for a Sunday or Thursday night. The rate is not offered from 20 December 2026 to 6 January 2027. Spicers Sangoma Retreat, about 90 minutes from Sydney, is adults-only.
Easter 2027 runs 26 to 29 March and NSW autumn school holidays 12 to 23 April, so book early around both. If you are pregnant, Virgin Australia asks for a doctor's or midwife's letter from 28 weeks, and Medibank travel insurance covers only unexpected serious pregnancy complications before the 26th week.
For wedding planning in the city first, see the Dubai wedding magazine.

From Dubai, a drive beats a flight, and from June to September a private pool and in-villa dining matter more than the view. The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert has 109 villas, each with a private pool, 80.2 km from DXB. If family events run on, Al Maha keeps you close, in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve 65 km from DXB. It has 42 villas with private plunge pools, takes children of all ages, and its 4x4 transfer from DXB costs AED 447 one way.
Six Senses Zighy Bay in Musandam is about two hours from DXB but crosses into Oman at the Dibba border, so keep it for four nights and check visa requirements for both the UAE and Oman, plus insurance, on the resort's how-to-get-there page. If either of you is pregnant, ask each desert or coastal resort how far its nearest hospital is before you book. Ramadan and Eid move each year, and National Day falls on 2 and 3 December, so check the dates first.
For a Cotswolds wedding, stay local at Thyme, a 150-acre estate with 31 bedrooms, Meadow Spa and The Ox Barn, where taxis are limited, so have the house team book ahead. After a London wedding, Cliveden House, a Grade I stately home on National Trust land, is 40 minutes away. Lime Wood in the New Forest, with Herb House Spa, is 12 minutes from Brockenhurst station, so neither of you needs to drive. For four nights, Eurostar reaches Paris from London in about 2 hours 16 minutes.

Aviva's research puts the expected spend on an overseas minimoon at £3,438 a couple, against £4,550 for an overseas honeymoon. Easter 2027 runs 26 to 29 March, and the May bank holidays fall on 3 and 31 May, so price those weekends early. If you're changing your name, GOV.UK lets you apply for a post-dated passport up to 3 months before the wedding, but you can't use it before the ceremony and some countries won't issue visas on one.
After a Hudson Valley wedding, stay in the valley. Troutbeck in Amenia is a 250-acre estate hotel with River Cottages and wellness at The Barns. Mirbeau Inn and Spa Rhinebeck has Willow restaurant and an outdoor hot spa pool, minutes from the Rhinecliff-Kingston train station, so the trip home needs no car. For a Hamptons wedding, Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton has 22 rooms and suites, a Jean-Georges restaurant open year-round and a car shuttle to the beaches.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, so book the Caribbean only on flexible terms in autumn, or move the beach to the honeymoon. If you are pregnant, ACOG names 14 to 28 weeks as the best time to travel and says most airlines allow US domestic flights until about 36 weeks. Ask your ob-gyn about hot pools such as Mirbeau's before you book.
Wedded Concierge plans your celebration, honeymoon travel included, and a minimoon belongs in that plan.
Book an eligible Virtuoso, Four Seasons or Rosewood Elite stay through your advisor, and Wedded Privileges may add breakfast, a hotel credit or an upgrade where available. Your advisor confirms which apply before you book. For the longer trip, browse our luxury honeymoon collection.
Start with the venue and the date. From those two, your advisor can work out how far to go and for how many nights.
