“Happy 25th anniversary @barackobama. A quarter of a century later, you’re still my best friend & the most extraordinary man I know. I love you,” Michelle tweeted, alongside a cute photo of the pair on their wedding day 25 years ago. Even back then the Obamas were a stylish pair – they manage to look timeless and elegant, escaping the curse that usually affects early 1990s wedding photos!
Even more impressive than the elegant photos is the fact that after 25 years, Barack and Michelle seem as in love as ever. There aren’t many relationships that can so effortlessly withstand the pressure of the hardest, most public job in the world (not to mention raising two teenage girls!) but the Obamas took it all in their stride and made it look easy and fun.
They’ve certainly come a long way. Back in 1996, when the couple had only been married only four years, they were interviewed as part of a project by photographer Mariana Cook. “Michelle is a tremendously strong person, and has a very strong sense of herself and who she is and where she comes from,” Barack said at the time.
He later went on to say, “what sustains our relationship is I’m extremely happy with her, and part of it has to do with the fact that she is at once completely familiar to me, so that I can be myself and she knows me very well and I trust her completely.” So cute! Now all these years later, it’s clear they both still feel the same way.
