Fashion is Art. But Styling is the Heartbeat. Global fashion stylist and creative director Collette Emily breaks down the best dressed looks at the Met Gala 2026, and what every bride can take from fashion's biggest night
There are two kinds of people at the Met Gala. Those who wear a look. And those who embody one.
Every year, the world's most watched red carpet separates the two within seconds. A dress can be extraordinary and still fall flat if the person wearing it hasn't fully committed to what it's saying. A woman who knows exactly what she is communicating before she takes a single step.
We sat down with Collette Emily, international fashion stylist, creative director, and one of the most instinctive eyes in the industry, to break down the looks that truly understood the assignment at the 2026 Met Gala, the trend that is heading straight for the altar, and what it would actually mean for a bride to dress like the Met.
Ask Collette Emily for the looks that moved her at the 2026 Met Gala, and her answer is immediate, and telling. She doesn't lead with technical construction or designer credentials. She leads with feeling.
"Rihanna stood out for her unexpected mix of crystal embellishments and detailed fabric choices," Collette says. "The way the fabric was sculpted around her body intentionally drew attention to her face, highlighting her as the moment. The styling was taken to the next level with the hair feature, adding another layer of storytelling and edge. It's never just about what she wears. It's how she embodies it. She always moves with clear intention."

Beyoncé, returning as co-chair after a decade, was the second. "She delivered a powerful balance of art, freedom, and femininity," Collette says. "The crystal and sheer cut-out detailing created an iconic statement, a true celebration of her body, highlighting her natural shape. The feathers expressed freedom and feminine flow. It felt aligned and fully expressed." In a night full of spectacle, it was the alignment between woman and look that Collette noticed most.

The third was perhaps the most unexpected pick, and the most instructive. "SZA was one of the most refreshing moments," Collette says. "Her use of yellow brought a sense of joy, warmth, and individuality. It felt emotionally driven and deeply connected to her essence. She expresses her appreciation for art through the finer details, always moving with love, light, and grace." In a sea of black and ivory and gold, SZA arrived in sunshine, and it was exactly right.

The throughline across all three? Not the designer. Not the price point. Not the construction. "Fashion is art," Collette says, "but styling is what brings the heartbeat. These looks made a mark because they weren't just worn. They were embodied."
Every year the Met Gala sends something down the red carpet that eventually finds its way to the altar. In 2026, Collette sees it clearly: the unexpected detail, chosen with intention.
"We're moving away from choosing a dress purely for how it looks," she explains, "and into choosing from an intentional place of how it makes you feel. That shift is what's driving more personalised, expressive bridal styling."

In practice, that means brides using fabric, embellishment, and silhouette in unexpected ways, to highlight both their personality and their unique love story. A customised veil with a hidden message. Crystal embellishments layered over softer fabrics. Textures that wouldn't traditionally be paired together. "The influence from the Met Gala will come through in that freedom," Collette says. "More creative, more detailed, more intentional with every element of the look."
This is the shift that matters: from dressing for the photograph to dressing for the feeling. And once a bride makes that mental move, everything about how she approaches her look changes.
For a stylist of Collette's calibre, the night also held missed opportunities, and she doesn't shy away from naming them.
"It's not my style to critique how someone chooses to express themselves," she says carefully. "I always respect that everyone is doing their best to own the moment in their own way." But with a theme as specific and as rich as Fashion is Art? "There was a real opportunity to go bold and make your mark. Art is about creating a moment that shifts how you feel. There were so many opportunities to push further through colour, more sculptural structure, exaggerated length, bold trains, and overall, more drama."
The designers she wishes had been represented more? Iris van Herpen. Viktor & Rolf. Stéphane Rolland. Georges Hobeika. Rahul Mishra. Nicolas Jebran. George Habibeh. Tamara Ralph. "Designers who create pieces that feel like true works of art," she says. "Pieces that are sculptural, dramatic, unexpected in their construction. That's what a Fashion is Art theme calls for."
Her closing thought lands like the best kind of brief: "Life is the runway. Your wedding day is the ultimate opportunity to celebrate who you are and the love story you have. Your style. Your way."
